St. Ambrose defeats Alverno 6-1

St. Ambrose swept doubles play and won all five of the contested singles matches as the Bees downed Alverno 6-1 Friday afternoon at the QC Tennis Club in Moline, Ill.

SAU didn't drop a game in doubles play. The No. 1 team of Julia Turek and Paige Bily, the No. 2 team of Jenna Smithmeyer and Paige Owens, and the No. 3 team of Kate Jones and Sarah Baxter all won by identical 6-0 scores.

The Bees also cruised through singles play.

Smithmeyer didn't drop a game in her 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles. Turek lost just two total games in her 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 1. Bily was pushed in her match at No. 2 singles before pulling out a 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 win.

Time constraints forced changes to the final three singles matches. Owens at No. 5 and Audrey Pender at No. 6 each won 8-0. The Bees then forfeited the No. 4 singles match.

St. Ambrose will begin its Spring Break trip to Hilton Head, S.C., with its first of three matches on Sunday, Mar. 17.
