St. Ambrose loses duals at Olivet Nazarene
The St. Ambrose men's and women's tennis teams lost duals at Olivet Nazarene this week. The women fell 4-0 and the men lost 4-1.
The men's dual Wednesday featured four third-set super-tiebreakers in singles play. Unfortunately, SAU dropped two of those matches. Gianfranco Garcia lost 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 at No. 4 singles and Bennet Piotrowski dropped a 6-4, 3-6, 10-2 decision at No. 5.
The other two matches went unfinished. Brian Lelm was up 5-0 in the super breaker at No. 2 singles and Gabriel Guimaray was deadlocked at 9-9 in his third set at No. 3. Paulo Vitor and Connor Leibforth fell in straight sets at No. 1 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
The Bee men did earn the doubles point. Vitor and Lelm teamed for a 6-2 win at No. 1 and Guimaray and Garcia won 6-2 at No. 2.
SAU, now 8-9 overall and 0-2 in the CCAC, will host in a conference dual Judson next Tuesday.
Playing shorthanded, the St. Ambrose women put up a good fight in their loss at Olivet Tuesday.
Audrey Pender led 6-4, 3-0 in her No. 4 singles match and Sarah Baxter was up 6-3, 1-2 at No. 5 in two of the three matches that went unfinished. Gabrielle Baffes was down a set at No. 6 singles before her match was stopped.
The top of the lineup - Paige Bily, Hayley Hoffman and Kate Jones - lost in straight sets.
Pender and Baffes combined for a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles for the Bees.
The SAU women, now 5-11 overall and 0-2 in conference play, will battle Coe and Cornell this Saturday.
