SAU Tennis in Hilton Head for Spring Break

The St. Ambrose men's and women's tennis teams are in Hilton Head, S.C., for their Spring Break trip. Each team will play three times.

Tuesday, March 21

Frostburg State 6, St. Ambrose Women 1 - Alison Hanson won a third-set super-tiebreaker for SAU's only victory in a 6-1 loss to Frostburg State to close the trip to Hilton Head, S.C. Hanson won 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 at No. 6 singles. Megan McConnaughay fell at No. 5 7-6, 7-5. SAU won only four combined games over the other four singles matches. The No. 1 doubles team of Kaylee Camp and Maggie Sullivan and the No. 3 team of McConnaughay and Haley Hoffman each lost 6-3.

Frostburg State 4, St. Ambrose Men 3 - St. Ambrose ended its Spring Break trip with a 4-3 loss to Frostburg State. The Bees got wins at No. 3, 4 and 5 singles. Gabriel Guimaray rebounded after dropping the first set to post a 4-6, 7-5, 10-0 win at No. 3. Gianfranco Garcia and Bennet Piotrowski won by identical 6-4, 6-2 scores at No. 4 and 5, respectively. Greyson Piotrowski lost a 6-4, 6-4 match at No. 6 singles. SAU lost two doubles matches late. The top team of Paulo Vitor and Brian Lelm fell 7-5 and the No. 2 team of Guimaray and Garcia lost 7-6 (7-4).


Monday, March 20

Carleton 9, St. Ambrose Women 0 - The Bees managed to win just five total games across the six singles matches in getting shutout by Carleton 9-0. Julia Turek lost 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Kaylee Camp fell 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2. Turek and Paige Bily fell 8-1 at No. 2 doubles.

Millikin 8, St. Ambrose Men 1 - Three matches went into a third-set super-tiebreaker, and St. Ambrose was only able to win one in an 8-1 loss to Millikin. Bennet Piotrowski got the Bee win, rallying from a set down to post a 3-6, 6-2, 10-6 at No. 5 singles. Brian Lelm and Gabriel Guimaray were unable to hold on after winning the first set in their matches. Lelm fell 2-6, 6-1, 10-7 at No. 2 and Guimaray lost 4-6, 6-1, 10-6 at No. 3. SAU also lost all three doubles matches with Bennet and Greyson Piotrowski's 8-4 loss at No. 3 the most competitive.


Sunday, March 19

Wooster 6, St. Ambrose Men 3 - The SAU men opened their Spring Break trip with a 6-3 loss to the College of Wooster. The Bees took two of the three doubles matches. Paulo Vitor and Brian Lelm teamed for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, and the No. 3 team of Bennet Piotrowski and Greyson Piotrowski won 8-5. Gabriel Guimaray and Gianfranco Garcia fell 8-4 at No. 2 doubles. But St. Ambrose only won one singles match. That was Vitor's 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 win at the top spot. Connor Leibforth dropped a third-set super-tiebreaker 0-6, 6-0, 11-9.

Union (N.Y.) 7, St. Ambrose Women 2Kaylee Camp won her singles match and paired with Maggie Sullivan for a doubles victory for the only two St. Ambrose wins in a 7-2 loss to Union (N.Y.). Camp prevailed in a third-set super-tiebreaker at No. 2 singles 4-6, 6-4, 10-7. Camp and Sullivan earned an 8-3 win at the top doubles spot. The No. 2 team of Paige Bily and Julia Turek fell 8-5 and both Bees also dropped competitive singles matches. Bily fell in a third-set super-breaker 6-1, 2-6, 10-7 at No. 3 while Turek lost at No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-3. Hayley Hoffman (No. 4), Alison Hanson (No. 5) and Megan McConnaughay (No. 6) lost in straight sets. Hanson and Kate Jones fell at No. 3 doubles.
