SAU Tennis on Spring Break trip

The St. Ambrose men's and women's tennis teams are in Orlando, Fla., for their annual Spring Break trip.

March 23
Women - West Georgia 7, St. Ambrose 0

St. Ambrose closed its spring break trip with a 7-0 loss to West Georgia. Kaylee Camp dropped the most competitive singles match, falling 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3. Camp and Kiersten Housenga fell 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. The Bees will open CCAC play at home at Davenport West High School against Holy Cross on Apr. 2. 

Men - St. Ambrose vs. Goucher
Brian Lelm earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles in the final competition of the trip for St. Ambrose. Lelm also paired with Bennet Piotrowski for an 8-7 (7-5) win at No. 1 doubles in the 7-2 loss to Goucher. Matt Zuccato and Connor Leibforth fell 8-3 at No. 3 doubles and Jacob Decker and James Boustead lost 8-2 at No. 2.

March 22
Women - Birmingham-Southern 5, St. Ambrose 2

Kiersten Housenga and Gillian Sondgeroth each claimed a singles victory for St. Ambrose in a 5-2 loss to Birmingham-Southern. Housenga earned the win at No. 1 after her opponent retired. Sondgeroth won by default at No. 6. Sondgeroth also teamed with Paige Bily to win by default at No. 3 doubles. The No. 1 doubles team of Housenga and Kaylee Camp and the No. 2 team of Maggie Sullivan and Kelsey Jaeger each fell 6-3.

Men - Birmingham-Southern 8, St. Ambrose 1
The Bees were only able to grab one win in an 8-1 loss to Birmingham-Southern Tuesday. James Boustead earned a 7-5 victory at No. 6 singles. The rest of the Bees combined to win just 13 games. In doubles, the top team of Brian Lelm and Bennet Piotrowski and the No. 3 team of Matt Zuccato and Connor Leibforth each lost 8-2.

March 21
Women - Oglethorpe 5, St. Ambrose 4
A third-set super-tiebreaker proved to be the difference as St. Ambrose fell to Oglethorpe 5-4. It was the Bees' fourth loss by a single match this season. SAU's Paige Bily pulled out a super-breaker win at No. 5 singles, 2-6, 6-2, 11-9, but Hayley Hoffman came up a little short at No. 6. She fell 6-4, 0-6, 11-9. Kelsey Jaeger earned a singles win for St. Ambrose, pulling out a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 4. Maggie Sullivan dropped a tight 6-4, 6-4 decision at No. 2 and Kaylee Camp fell 7-5, 6-0 at No. 3. Camp and Kiersten Housenga earned an 8-7 (7-5) win at No. 1 doubles for the Bees. The No. 2 team of Jaeger and Sullivan prevailed 8-4.

Men - Oglethorpe 8, St. Ambrose 1
James Boustead was the lone winner in the SAU men's first dual of the trip. Boustead won 6-1, 4-6, 10-7 in a third-set super-tiebreaker at No. 6 singles. Brian Lelm battled at No. 1 singles before falling 6-0, 7-5. Lelm and Bennet Piotrowski at No. 1 doubles and Matt Zuccato and Connor Leibforth at No. 3 doubles both fell 8-4.

March 20
Women - St. Catherine 9, St. Ambrose 0
The SAU women opened the trip with a 9-0 loss to a tough St. Catherine team. The Bees' most competitive match came at No. 3 singles where Kelsey Jaeger fell in a third-set super-tiebreaker 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 10-6. Maggie Sullivan (No. 2 singles) and Paige Bily (No. 4) each won three games in their singles matches. The three St. Ambrose doubles teams combined to win a total of three games.
