SAU crowns multiple All-Americans at NAIA Swimming & Diving Championships

St. Ambrose wrapped up its season with multiple All-American finishes at the 2023 NAIA Swimming & Diving Championships at the Columbus Aquatics Center in Columbus, Ga.

On the heels of seven-time All-American Andrea Adam's graduation, the Bee divers picked up multiple All-American accolades. Bram Mess was the national runner-up in both the men's 1-meter (220.95) and 3-meter (223.70) events. Kait Zucco finished fifth in the women's 1-meter diving competition, earning a score of 175.40.

Juan Gomez, who took eighth in the men's 200-yard butterfly last year, was sixth this year. He finished in a time of 1:51.58. Leyre Antonanzas also repeated as an All-American. And she did it twice. Antonanzas finished in the top eight in both the women's 200- and 400-yard individual medley. She was sixth in the 400 IM in 4:31.67 and eighth in the 200 IM in 2:07.74. She was eighth in both events in 2022.

The other SAU All-American is Irene Artabe. Artabe placed eighth in the women's 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.05 seconds.

Three men's relay teams received All-American honorable mention. Ryan Warrick, Mikhi Hassim, Brett Jones and Petter Kolaas were sixth in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:23.45; Benny Zarhin, Warrick, Hassim and Ryan Joehl were sixth in the 400-yard freestyle relay; and Egoitz Munoz Moreno, Kolaas, Hassim and Warrick were seventh in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:31.93.

The Bees also scored points in the other two men's relays - Gomez, Zarhin, Joehl and Grant Nelson were ninth in the 800-yard freestyle relay (6:52.91) and Joehl, Kolaas, Hassim and Zarhin were 10th in the 400-yard medley relay (3:26.88).

The women also scored in all five relays. Bryn Kiley, Grace Bobeldyk, Artabe and Antonanzas had the best finish, taking ninth in the 800 free relay in 7:48.68. The same foursome took 10th in the 400 free relay in 3:37.65. Antonanzas, Bridget O'Grady, Artabe and Molly Duehr were 12th in the 200 medley relay in 1:49.17; Antonanzas, O'Grady, Artabe and Kiley finished 12th in the 400 medley relay in 4:00.07; and Artabe, Kiley, Duehr and O'Grady were 13th in the 200 free relay in 1:41.34.

The women also received points in five other individual events. Artabe placed 11th in the 200-yard IM, finishing in 2:08.08. Duehr took 11th in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:24.30. O'Grady was 12th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.16) and 14th in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:26.53). Kiley placed 16th in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:16.08.

The SAU women finished 11th overall, totaling 130 points. They nearly had several other points. Artabe (100 butterfly), Antonanzas (200 backstroke) and Bobeldyk (1650 freestyle) each finished 17th, and Duehr took 18th in the 100-yard breaststroke.

The St. Ambrose men took seventh with 187 total points.

Gomez narrowly missed out on another All-American finish, settling for a ninth-place effort in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:34.92. He was also 14th in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:42.26. Hassim earned points in three individual events, taking 13th in the 100-yard butterfly in 49.86 seconds, 14th in the 200-yard IM in 1:52.77, and 15th in the 100-yard backstroke in 51.77 seconds. Munoz Moreno was 13th in the 100 back in 51.59 seconds and 16th in the 200 back in 1:58.02. SAU also received points from Joehl (13th in the 200 back in 1:52.33) and Warrick (15th in the 100 free in 46.34 seconds).
