Artabe sets school record at Norse Sprint Invite

Irene Artabe set a women's school record in the 100-yard individual medley to highlight the Bees' performance at the Luther Norse Sprint Invite Saturday in Decorah, Iowa.

Artabe won the event in a time of 1:01.09. Entering the season, the record was 1:03.78, set by Shraddha Sudhir in December 2018. Artabe, Leyre Antonanzas and Bridget O'Grady have all gone faster this season, with Artabe now the new current record-holder.

That was one of three top-six finishes for Artabe. She was runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke in 59.76 seconds and placed sixth in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:04.46.

Artabe was one of three Bees to win an individual event on the women's side. Lauren Williams won the 100-yard freestyle in 55.61 seconds. Grace Bobeldyk was fifth and Marin Powell eighth as SAU placed seven in the top 16.

Bridget O'Grady took the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.86. Molly Duehr was third, Valentina Espinosa seventh, and Audra Shoop eighth as the Bees earned points from seven swimmers in the event. Duehr (third, 33.81 seconds), Espinosa (fourth, 34.67) and Shoop (eighth, 36.18) also scored in the 50 breast.

Along with her win in the 100 free, Williams was second in the 50 free in 25.84 seconds. Bryn Kiley was sixth in 26.61 seconds. Kiley also placed third in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:03.00. Amber Warak was eighth in 2:13.43.

Leyre Antonanzas was second in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:02.18. O'Grady (1:03.31) and Bobeldyk (1:03.47) were fourth and fifth, respectively, right ahead of Artabe. Antonanzas was also third in the 100 back in 1:02.62.

Amanda Beuth was fifth in the 50-yard backstroke in 30.08 seconds. Marin Powell was eighth in 31.24 seconds. Rylie Steinkamp's time of 28.16 seconds was good for fifth in the 50-yard butterfly. O'Grady was eighth in 28.66 seconds.

Kait Zucco took eighth in the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 265.95.

Artabe, O'Grady, Antonanzas and Williams teamed to win the 200-yard medley relay in 1:52.86, while Antonanzas, Steinkamp, Duehr and Williams were fifth in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:45.45.

The St. Ambrose women took third with 583.5 points.

Thanks to their depth, the Bee men won with 649.5 points despite winning just two individual events.

Ryan Warrick touched first in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.80 seconds. Brett Jones, who took second in the 50-yard butterfly in 24.08 seconds, was sixth in the 50 free in 22.85 seconds.

Juan Gomez led three Bees in the top eight of the 500-yard freestyle. Gomez won in 4:59.14 while Leo Edwards was third (5:05.85) and Sam Gillham placed eighth (5:24.07).

SAU found continued success in the freestyle events. Ryan Warrick (48.36 seconds) was fourth in the 100 free. Edwards (49.19) and Ryan Joehl (49.42) were seventh and eighth, respectively. Edwards (1:49.03) and Luke Sproule (1:49.42) finished third-fourth in the 200 free. Joehl touched in 1:50.37 to take seventh and Gomez was eighth in 1:50.64.

Bram Mess took fourth in both the 1-meter (318.35) and 3-meter (334.00) diving events. Ryan Safta was fourth in the 50-yard backstroke in 25.92 seconds. Egoitz Munoz Moreno was fifth in 26.02 seconds, Javier Santiago placed sixth in 26.29 seconds and Carter Prull was eighth in 26.51 seconds.
