St. Ambrose men, women defeat Midland

St. Ambrose continued its season by defeating Midland in a dual in Fremont, Neb., Saturday. The Bee men won 152-56 while the women edged Midland 106-98.

While the SAU men won nine different individual events, the women won only five but claimed the dual behind their depth.

Bridget O'Grady won a pair of events. She took the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:06.81 and the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.89. Grace Bobeldyk was runner-up in the 100 fly in a time of 1:02.84.

Irene Artabe took the 400-yard individual medley in 4:51.91, and Leyre Antonanzas, who was also third in the 200-yard freestyle, won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.40. Kait Zucco was the other Bee winner, taking the women's 1-meter diving event with a score of 200.25.

Bryn Kiley earned two runner-up finishes. She took second in the 200 free in 2:01.35 and in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:24.49. Bobeldyk was third in the 500 free.

Lauren Williams had two top-three finishes. She was second in the 100-yard freestyle in 57.18 seconds. Marin Powell was third. Williams also added a third-place showing in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.27 seconds. Allison Fellner's time of 21:45.60 was good for second in the 1650-yard freestyle.

Antonanzas, O'Grady, Artabe and Rylie Steinkamp won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:56.56. Williams, Artabe, Kiley and Amanda Beuth were second in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:52.41.

Benny Zarhin was a two-event champ for the St. Ambrose men. He won both the 100-yard (47.41 seconds) and 200-yard freestyle (1:44.06) events. Ryan Joehl was second in the 200 free in 1:46.76 and also earned third in the 100-yard backstroke. Egoitz Munoz Moreno won the 100 back in 54.68 seconds.

Brett Jones won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.34 seconds. In third, was Lucas Ascua. Ascua also finished third behind Zarhin in the 100 free.

SAU claimed the top three spots in the 400-yard individual medley. Luke Sproule won in 4:22.99. Isaac Garcia (4:26.49) was second and Walter de Jongh was third. De Jongh was the champion in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:01.61.

Juan Gomez won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:54.88 and Sproule placed third. Mikhi Hassim (51.22 seconds) and Javier Santiago took first and third, respectively, in the 100-yard butterfly. Bram Mess was the other Bee winner, taking the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 226.90.

St. Ambrose also got second- and third-place efforts in teh 1650-yard freestyle. Jonathan Rollwa was runner-up in 17:31.14 and David Schneider took third.

The Bees also won both relays. Ryan Safta, de Jongh, Hassim and Jones won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:38.64; and Jones, Zarhin, Ascua and Joehl won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:14.71.

SAU will host Loras in a dual meet next Saturday at the Davenport Central Natatorium.
