Bee men win home opener over Truman State

Competing in their home pool for the first time, the Bees took a dual from Truman State Saturday afternoon. The men won 179-111 while the women fell 171-114 at the Davenport Central Natatorium.

The men won eight individual events and had multiple top-three times.

Rais Hassim was the lone dual-event winner for the Bee men. He won the 100-yard freestyle in 47.90 seconds and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.34.

Mikhi Hassim led a 1-2-3 SAU charge in the 100-yard backstroke. He won the event in 52.88 seconds. Ryan Safta (53.99) and Egoitz Munoz (54.46) were right behind. Mikhi Hassim's time of 50.72 seconds was good for second place in the 100-yard butterfly. Javier Santiago was third in 55.21 seconds.

St. Ambrose also took the top three spots in the 500-yard freestyle. Juan Gomez was the winner in 4:55.32. Jonathan Rollwa was runner-up in 4:57.39 and Leo Edwards was third in 5:01.07. Gomez also added a third-place effort in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:00.91.

Rollwa and David Schneider took first and second in the 1650-yard freestyle with times of 17:17.90 and 17:31.72, respectively.

Ryan Joehl won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:57.27. Safta was third in 2:03.55. Luke Sproule touched the wall in 4:21.39 to claim the 400-yard individual medley. William Walker-Roze finished third in 4:29.05. Sproule also took third in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:03.15.

The other SAU winner was Bram Mess. His score of 211.05 won the 1-meter diving competition.

St. Ambrose had second- and third-place finishes in three events - Brett Jones (21.81) and Ryan Warrick (21.82) in the 50-yard freestyle, Benny Zarhin (1:45.99) and Juan Gomez (1:46.89) in the 200-yard freestyle, and Benjamin Patterson (2:23.70) and Thomas Noller (2:24.39) in the 200-yard breaststroke. Warrick (48.37 in the 100 free) and Walter de Jongh (1:01.41 in the 100 breast) also had third-place swims.

Safta, de Jongh, Mikhi Hassim and Jones won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:36.79. Zarhin, Rais Hassim, Jones and Warrick were runners-up in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:12.71.

The SAU women won five individual events, led by Bridget O'Grady's two victories. O'Grady took both the 100-yard (1:06.67) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:26.62).

Leyre Antonanzas was victorious in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:11.13. She was also third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:59.78.

Grace Bobeldyk edged a Truman State swimmer by less than a second for first place with her time of 5:24.80 in the 500-yard freestyle. Madeline Piper was third in 6:01.00.

Kait Zucco won the 1-meter diving with a score of 197.40.

Irene Artabe earned a runner-up and a pair of third-place finishes. She was second in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.81. Artabe was third in both the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.82) and the 400-yard individual medley (4:53.18).

Caitlin Pieroni was second in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:29.32 and teammate Rylie Steinkamp was third in 2:30.96. Lauren Williams took third in the 100-yard freestyle in 56.48 seconds, and Bryn Kiley was third in the 1650-yard freestyle in 18:52.67.

Artabe, O'Grady, Antonanzas and Williams teamed to win the 200-yard medley relay in 1:51.57. Williams, Antonanzas, Bobeldyk and Kiley finished second in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:48.57.

The Bees will hit the road next Saturday to visit Midland.
