SAU falls in dual competition at Olivet Nazarene

In just the second competition of the year, St. Ambrose dropped a dual at Olivet Nazarene Saturday. The Bee men lost 119-98 while the women fell 134-77.

The men won a total of four individual events, including a sweep of the top three positions in the 1650-yard freestyle. Sam Gillham won the event in 17:50.77. Grant Nelson was second in 18:15.34 and William Walker-Rozo took third in 18:49.58.

The Bees had three of the top five in the 100-yard butterfly. Mikhi Hassim led the way with a winning time of 52.52 seconds. Rais Hassim was third in 53.64 and Walter De Jongh was fifth in 55.24.

Ryan Warrick was the champion in the 100-yard freestyle. He touched in 47.90 seconds. Benny Zarhin was fourth in 48.88 seconds.

Diving for the first time this season, Bram Mess won the men's 1-meter event with a score of 194.05.

The Bees claimed three of the top five spots in three other men's individual events. Ryan Joehl took second in the 100-yard backstroke in 55.03 seconds. Ryan Safta was fourth in 55.40 and Egoitz Munoz Moreno was fifth in 56.97. Rais Hassim (1:00.75), De Jongh (1:01.73) and Petter Kolaas (1:03.55) were second, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 100-yard breaststroke. Mikhi Hassim (2:01.18), Garret Sims (2:06.81) and David Schneider (2:07.03) also finished second, fourth and fifth in the 200-yard individual medley.

Juan Gomez was runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:56.81. Jonathan Rollwa was third in 5:03.64. Kolaas and Warrick came in third-fourth in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.09 and 22.17 seconds, respectively. Zarhin (1:46.88) took third in the 200-yard freestyle with Joehl placing fifth in 1:47.85. 

SAU also got second- and third-place efforts in both relays. Safta, Rais Hassim, Mikhi Hassim and Warrick were second in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:36.83. Munoz Moreno, Kolaas, Javier Santiago and Brett Jones were third in 1:39.52. Gomez, Leo Edwards, Zarhin and Joehl (7:16.99) were runners-up in the 800-yard freestyle relay, and Luke Sproule, Tayden Blair, Rollwa and Nelson (7:33.41) came in third.

The St. Ambrose women also claimed four individual first-place finishes.

Grace Bobeldyk led a 1-2-3 Bee charge in the 1650-yard freestyle. Bobeldyk won in 19:20.45. Caitlin Pieroni was second in 20:49.96 and Amber Warak took third in 21:00.44.

SAU also had three of the top-four finishers in the 100-yard butterfly. Irene Artabe won the event in 1:00.11, while Bridget O'Grady (1:03.00) was third and Bobeldyk (1:04.18) was fourth.

Leyre Antonanzas won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:12.29. Allison Fellner also scored in the 200 IM with her eighth-place effort.

Kait Zucco was the other Bee winner. She took the women's 1-meter diving competition with a score of 165.65.

Antonanzas (1:01.25) and Amanda Beuth (1:05.00) were third and fifth, respectively, in the 100-yard backstroke. Bryn Kiley (5:32.72) and Riley Loeffler (5:56.60) were also third and fifth in the 500-yard freestyle. Kiley added a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:04.07. Lauren Williams earned a team point with her sixth-place showing. O'Grady was fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.83, while Valentina Espinosa took sixth.

Marin Powell touched the wall in 1:00.01 to take fifth in the 100-yard freestyle. Warak was sixth. Beuth (sixth) and Powell (seventh) added points in the 50-yard freestyle.

SAU also scored in both relay events. Antonanzas, O'Grady, Artabe and Williams came in third in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:51.31. Williams, Bobeldyk, Artabe and Kiley were second in the 800-yard freestyle in 8:27.17, and Beuth, Pieroni, Emily Henson and Warak were third in 9:19.87.

The Bees will compete for the first time at home next Saturday when they battle Truman State at 1 p.m. at the Davenport Central Natatorium.
