St. Ambrose opens season by winning dual at Quincy

St. Ambrose officially started its 2022-23 season by winning a dual at Quincy University Friday night. The SAU women cruised to a 145-42 victory while the men used their depth in a 110-86 win.

The St. Ambrose women won seven of the nine individual events. Leyre Antonanzas led the team with two wins. She took the 200-yard backstroke in 2:11.39 and won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:12.82.

Three other Bees each picked up a win and a runner-up finish. Bridget O'Grady won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:28.30 and was second to Antonanzas in the the 200 IM in 2:19.84. Lauren Williams touched first in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:04.66 and was second in the 100-yard freestyle in 57.86 seconds. Grace Bobeldyk was first in the 1000-yard freestyle in 11:20.85 and second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:32.74.

Irene Artabe and Bryn Kiley were the other Bee winners. Artabe took the 100 free in 56.63 seconds while Kiley won the 500 free in 5:29.95. Artabe added a third-place effort in the 200 breast and Kiley was third in the 1000 free.

Allison Fellner picked up a second-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:37.50.

Amanda Beuth, Riley Loeffler and Caitlin Pieroni each scored points in two events. Beuth was third in the 100 free and fourth in the 200 free. Loeffler earned a pair of thirds in the 200 free and 200 back. Pieroni was third in the 200 IM and fourth in the 200 back.

Rylie Steinkamp (third 50 free), Madeline Piper (third 500 free), Marin Powell (fourth 50 free), Valentina Espinosa (fourth 200 breast) and Audra Shoop (fifth 50 free) also scored for St. Ambrose.

SAU also took first, second and third in both women's relays. Antonanzas, O'Grady, Artabe and Williams won the 400-yard medley relay in 4:05.89. Pieroni, Espinosa, Steinkamp and Powell were second and Amber Warak, Shoop, Fellner and Libby Moses were third. Steinkamp, Bobeldyk, Beuth and Kiley won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:47.75. Powell, Moses, Loeffler and Shoop were second, while Emily Henson, Warak, Piper and Espinosa finished third.

The Bee men won only three individual events, but took second in eight of nine races, and third place in all nine.

Benny Zarhin, Juan Gomez and Mikhi Hassim were the SAU winners. Zarhin won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:48.51. Gomez won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:02.47. Hassim was first in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:01.35. Zarhin was also fourth in the 100 free, and Gomez was runner-up to Zarhin in the 200 free and second in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:05.18.

Jonathan Rollwa picked up a pair of second-place finishes, those coming in the 500 free (5:02.66) and 1000 free (10:35.21). Grant Nelson and Isaac Garcia each had two top-three efforts. Nelson was third to Rollwa in both the 500 free (5:15.37) and 1000 free (10:46.40). Garcia was third in both the 200 IM (2:07.94) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:26.38).

Ryan Warrick was runner-up in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.12 seconds. Rais Hassim took second in the 100 free in 48.82 seconds. Ryan Joehl was second in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:58.53. Jaden Dydell's time of 2:23.58 was good for second in the 200 breast. Brett Jones was third in the 100 free (49.44) and fourth in the 50 free (22.27).

Also scoring in individual events were Petter Kolaas (third 50 free), Leo Edwards (third 200 free), David Schneider (third 200 back), Luke Sproule (third 200 fly), Garret Sims (fourth 200 back), Nikolai Valencia (fourth 200 IM), Javier Santiago (fourth 200 fly) and Thomas Noller (fourth 200 breast).

The team of Joehl, Kolaas, Mikhi Hassim and Rais Hassim took second in the 400-yard medley relay in 3:37.78. Sims, Dydell, Santiago and Warrick were third. Schneider, Noller, Sproule and Isaac Garcia were fourth. Warrick, Kolaas, Jones and Mikhi Hassim were second in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:27.93. Rais Hassim, Zarhin, Edwards and Valencia were third, and Sims, Rollwa, Joehl and Dydell were fifth.

St. Ambrose will compete at Olivet Nazarene next Saturday.
