SAU nets three in win over Cougars

St. Ambrose women's soccer netted three goals and picked up a conference win Saturday afternoon. SAU defeated Saint Xavier 3-1 at the St. Vincent's Athletic Complex in Davenport.

The Bees (4-4, 2-1 CCAC) got on the board in the 17th minute. Kaitlyn Brunson found Mia Hefner, who was making her first start, for the score and a 1-0 lead. In the 23rd minute, St. Ambrose doubled their lead when Daniya El-Zein sent a ball that found a streaking Kendall Wendt. Wendt was able to get behind the Cougar defense and found the back of the net for a two-goal advantage. Rachel Willette protected the 2-0 lead for the Bees with a save in the 31st minute, and SAU would go into halftime up two.

Saint Xavier would get on the board in the second half, scoring on a free kick in the 48th minute to make it 2-1. El-Zein and Wendt would connect once again for the Bees in the 56th minute to account for the 3-1 final.

St. Ambrose outshot Saint Xavier 20-8, with a 12-3 advantage in shots on goal. Taylor DeSplinter recorded six shots, Brunson had four, and Hefner recorded three. Wendt and Lauren Malone had two shots apiece. Willette finished with two saves in the win.

SAU will be back at home on Wednesday, September 27th at 6 p.m. when they face Judson University.
