St. Ambrose drops double-overtime heartbreaker to Cardinal Stritch in CCAC Semifinal

St. Ambrose dropped a heartbreaker in double-overtime Wednesday afternoon in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the CCAC Semifinals. Cardinal Stritch scored in the 109th minute to take the 2-1 double-overtime victory.

With neither team scoring in the first 90 minutes, the game headed to overtime. The home team struck first as Reva Ros found the back of the net in the 93rd minute to give Cardinal Stritch a 1-0 lead. The Wolves got three more attempts at goal before the Bees found the equalizer. Taylor DeSplinter netted her 20th goal of the season in the 99th minute to make it 1-1 heading into the second overtime period.

Margaret Hamilton put a shot wide in the 102nd, and Haillee Wilson had her chance saved in the 105th minute for SAU. Cardinal Stritch would get the winner from Mari Sagstad with a minute left to take the 2-1 win.

The first half saw the Wolves with the first two chances, but both opportunities missed the net. Jenna Horst had her header saved in the 9th minute for the first chance for St. Ambrose. Wilson, Abigail Goff, Mary Evans, and DeSplinter also recorded shots for SAU in the first half.

Rachel Willette was tested early in the second half, making back-to-back saves on Mari Sagstad to keep the game tied at zero. St. Ambrose had nine shots in the second frame but couldn't find the back of the net as the game would head to overtime.

Willette finished with four saves in the loss. DeSplinter had six shots, Goff had four, and Evans recorded three. Willette, Evans, DeSplinter, Adriane Latham, Natalie Miller, and Daniya El-Zein played the entire game for St. Ambrose.
