Underclassmen help Bees to comeback victory on Senior Day

On a day that St. Ambrose honored four seniors - Margaret Hamilton, Alyssa Schichner, Molly McLaughlin, and Natalie Miller - it was a couple of underclassmen that helped the Bees to a 2-1 comeback victory Saturday afternoon in Davenport against St. Francis (Ill.).

Down 1-0 to start the second half, SAU (6-2-3, 5-0-2 CCAC) got the tying goal in the 61st minute. Taylor DeSplinter scored her 11th goal of the season by placing a sliding shot into the lower left corner to draw the Bees even. After three straight corner kicks by St. Ambrose, they finally got the game-winner in the 80th minute. The Saints (8-4-1, 4-3-1 CCAC) cleared the ball off a corner kick, but only to just outside the box. Haillee Wilson sent a lofted shot back in, and the ball got over the outstretched hand of the USF keeper to give St. Ambrose a 2-1 lead. The Bees would hold on from there, with Rachel Willette making a save in the 90th minute to secure the comeback win on Senior Day.

St. Ambrose had plenty of chances in the first half to take the lead, but Kaitlyn Brunson's header was blocked off the line in the 3rd minute, and DeSplinter had a header go wide left a few minutes later. Schichner had two chances for SAU - one in the 17th minute and another in the 20th - but both were off the mark. The visitors almost took the lead in the 27th minute, but Andrea Aguirre's shot hit off the crossbar. Willette made two more saves in the period before St. Francis got the first goal. After a foul in the box on St. Ambrose, Allison Schaar converted the penalty kick to give St. Francis a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute. DeSplinter, Miller, and Brunson had opportunities for the Bees before the halftime whistle.

Willette made four saves for SAU in the win. McLaughlin also saw time in net for the Bees. DeSplinter totaled seven shots, Brunson four, and Miller and Schichner had two. Mary Evans and Grace Kuchar also recorded shots.

St. Ambrose will travel to Indiana Northwest on Wednesday, October 12th to take on the Redhawks at 3:30 p.m.
