St. Ambrose gets conference win over Saint Xavier

Taylor DeSplinter's goal in the 78th minute broke a 1-1 tie as St. Ambrose would go on to win 3-1 over Saint Xavier Saturday in Davenport. With the win, SAU moves to 3-2-2 overall and 2-0-1 in conference. SXU drops to 1-4-2 overall and 1-1 in conference.

The Bees got off to a fast start, with Kaitlyn Brunson scoring in the 4th minute to give St. Ambrose an early 1-0 lead. SAU tried to double their lead, but Haillee Wilson's attempts in the 7th and 14th minutes were off the mark. Abigail Goff and Mary Evans forced the Cougar keeper into saves in the 12th and 23rd minutes. Rachel Willette was called into action for SAU in the 26th minute, making a save to keep the Bees up by one. Lauren Bendall and Margaret Hamilton had two chances each at the end of the first half to find another score, but St. Ambrose would go into halftime only up one.

DeSplinter and Brunson had chances on goal to start the second half, but both were turned away by the SXU goalie. Molly McLaughlin made her only save of the game in the 65th minute to keep St. Ambrose in the lead, but Saint Xavier would get the tying goal just three minutes later from Alani Villa. Almost ten minutes later, the Bees were able to break the tie. A Brunson corner kick found the head of DeSplinter and into the back of the net for a 2-1 lead. Alyssa Schichner added a goal at the 80:10 mark to account for the final score.

St. Ambrose will be back at home on Tuesday for another conference contest, taking on Roosevelt University at 5 p.m.
