SAU falls to No. 7 Indiana Wesleyan in NAIA Tournament

St. Ambrose's season came to an end Thursday night in Marion, Indiana, falling 2-1 in the NAIA Opening Round against No. 7 Indiana Wesleyan. The Wildcats used a 13-9 advantage in shots and a 5-0 edge in corner kicks to help in the victory.

Morgan Wahlen had the first chance for the Bees in the 4th minute, but her shot was saved. IWU got off shots in the 8th minute and 15th minute, but both attempts were turned away by Rachel Willette. The home team would nab the first goal of the game in the 24th minute from Sarah Foulk. A scramble in front of the goal off a corner kick gave Indiana Wesleyan a 1-0 lead. St. Ambrose would get just two more chances on goal in the period - Kaitlyn Brunson in the 28th minute and Adriane Latham in the 38th minute. Willette had back-to-back saves in the 45th minute to keep the deficit at one heading into halftime.

After a shot from senior Wahlen was saved in the 53rd minute, it was two freshmen that teamed up for the SAU goal. Brunson dribbled down the left side of the field, nutmegged a defender, and sent a cross into the box. Taylor DeSplinter got on the end of the cross and beat the goalie to tie the game up in the 55th minute. The St. Ambrose offense would go quiet for the next 20 minutes, while Indiana Wesleyan got six opportunities. The Wildcats would net the game-winner in the 75th minute on a goal from Jackie Norris inside the box. The Bees got two chances late, but Haley Salander's attempt was blocked in the 81st minute, and Brunson's shot just went over the bar in the 87th minute.

Rachel Willette finished with seven saves in the loss. Brunson, DeSplinter, and Wahlen each had two shots, while Abigail Goff, Latham, and Salander recorded one. Nuria Montouto and Erin Smothers joined Latham and Salander on the defensive backline for a 90-minute effort. Mary Evans and Wahlen played the full 90 as well.

The Bees finish the season with a 15-6-1 record. The 15 wins are the most for St. Ambrose since 2010.
