Wahlen scores hat-trick in win over Jaguars

Morgan Wahlen scored three goals Tuesday afternoon as St. Ambrose rolled past Governors State, 5-0, in Crown Point, Ind. With the win, SAU is now 11-5-1 overall and 9-3-1 in the CCAC. Due to a delay in the start, the teams played 35-minute halves.

The Bees got it going early, even with the delay. Taylor DeSplinter scored her sixth goal of the season in the 4th minute after splitting two defenders. Wahlen would net her first of the day in the 14th minute, converting a penalty kick to give St. Ambrose a 2-0 lead. Just two minutes later, Wahlen would strike again, scoring from five yards out off an assist from DeSplinter and Keeli FrerichsRachel Willette kept the home team off the board in the 17th minute, stopping a shot by Veronica Davila. Nuria Montouto and Grace Kuchar would both have shots go high as SAU would take a 3-0 lead into halftime.

Wahlen got her team-leading 14th goal of the season in the 42nd minute, scoring with her head on an assist from Adriane Latham and Montouto. Mary Evans and DeSplinter had back-to-back chances saved in the 46th minute by Gaby Smola. After Riley Garcia hit the crossbar in the 48th minute, Evans was able to follow it up and find the back of the net for the final tally, and the 5-0 victory.

Willette was credited with five saves in the win, and the St. Ambrose defense earned their seventh shutout of the year. Wahlen, DeSplinter, and Garcia each recorded five shots. Montouto and Frerichs each had three, and Evans, Kaitlyn Brunson, and Alyssa Schichner had two.
