St. Ambrose earns draw against Cardinal Stritch

Morgan Wahlen scored with a minute and a half left in regulation as St. Ambrose earned a 1-1 double-overtime draw against Cardinal Stritch on Wednesday evening at the St. Vincent's Athletic Complex. The tie was the first of the season for SAU as they move to 9-5-1 overall and 7-3-1 in the conference. CSU, who is receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 Poll, is now 10-1-2 overall and 8-1-1 in the CCAC.

With time ticking away and down 1-0, Adriane Latham put a long throw-in into the box. The ball took a bounce, and Wahlen was able to get a head on it and place it into the left corner to force the game into overtime.

St. Ambrose was down for most of the match as Cardinal Stritch got a goal from Maaike Rheinfrank in the 4th minute. SAU's first chance on goal came from Taylor DeSplinter in the 25th minute, but her shot was saved. Haley Salander and Abigail Goff also had shots on goal for the Bees in the first half.

The Wolves looked to add to their lead early in the second half, but Rachel Willette made a stop on Rheinfrank in the 47th minute to keep the game at 1-0. Alyssa Schichner had a chance to tie the game up in the 67th minute, but her shot went off the crossbar. After an offside call on Cardinal Stritch, St. Ambrose was able to move the ball downfield. The Bees earned a throw-in that led to Wahlen's goal in the 89th minute.

SAU had the best opportunities in the first overtime period as Riley Garcia and Goff had their shots saved by Marina Johnstone. The Bees got three chances in the second overtime to score, but Garcia, Wahlen, and Natalie Miller couldn't find the winner, and the game would end in a 1-1 draw.

SAU's defense allowed just six shots, and Willette was credited with four saves. Willette - along with Erin SmothersMary Evans, and Latham - played the full 110 minutes.

The Bees were scheduled to play Trinity International on Saturday, October 23rd, but the Trojans forfeited the match. SAU's next game will be on October 26th at 5 p.m. when they travel to Governors State University.
