St. Ambrose wins conference road test

After taking down No. 25 Trinity Christian on Tuesday, St. Ambrose faced another conference test, traveling to first-place Holy Cross on Saturday morning. The Bees were up for the challenge, getting a 2-1 victory over the Saints in Notre Dame, Ind. The win gives SAU a 5-2 record in conference, the same as Trinity Christian and Holy Cross. 

Kaitlyn Brunson scored the game-winner in the 81st minute off an assist from Morgan Wahlen. The home team got the scoring started in the second half. Olivia Shaw found Kassidi Puthoff off a corner kick in the 59th minute for a 1-0 lead. St. Ambrose would respond in the 76th minute when Genevieve Bowyer got on the end of a Mary Evans corner kick for the 1-1 tie. After the SAU goal, Rachel Willette made a save on the Saints to keep the game even. Five minutes after the first score for SAU, Brunson would net the winner. 

The first half saw both teams have just two shots each. Wahlen had her shot saved in the 18th minute, and Evans hit the crossbar in the 24th. Holy Cross had a shot blocked in the 15th minute, and Willette made a save in the 28th as the teams would head to halftime tied at zero. 

Brunson, Evans, Wahlen, and Taylor DeSplinter had two shots each in the win. The SAU defense of Willette, Erin SmothersAdriane LathamHaley SalanderNatalie Miller, and Keeli Frerichs limited the home team to seven shots. Those six Bees played the full 90 minutes. Willette had four saves in the win. 

St. Ambrose will be off until Saturday, October 9th. They will take on the University of St. Francis (Ill.) at 1 p.m. in Joliet.
