Frerichs scores game-winner, SAU upsets No. 23 Trinity Christian in 2OT

Keeli Frerichs scored the game-winner in the 103rd minute on Tuesday in Davenport as St. Ambrose took down No. 23 Trinity Christian, 2-1, at the St. Vincent's Athletic Complex. Frerichs received a pass from Grace Kuchar and hit a shot from way outside the box that just got over the outstretched arms of the Troll keeper for the goal. SAU handed the visitors just their second loss of the season, and this is the first time since 2016 that St. Ambrose has beaten Trinity Christian.

The Bees (6-4, 4-2 CCAC) had six chances for the opening goal in the first 15 minutes but could not convert. In the 21st minute, Taylor DeSplinter sent a cross from the right side to the near post and found Kaitlyn Brunson for the opening score. The visitors would respond just four minutes later when Selah Hopkins found the back of the net to make it 1-1. The Trolls (8-2, 4-2 CCAC) got another opportunity from Hopkins in the 41st minute, but her attempt went off the crossbar. Alyssa Schichner put a shot on goal for the Bees to close out the half as the teams would go to the locker rooms tied at one.

Brunson and Mary Evans got the first chances in the second half, but they each had their shots saved by the Trinity goalie. The Bees held the Trolls to just one shot in the second half, while having eight opportunities of their own, but neither team found a goal as the game headed into overtime.

Tori Timmerman had a shot go high, and Rachel Willette made a save in the first overtime period keeping the game tied at one, which led to Frerichs netting the long range game-winner in the second overtime.

Frerichs and Willette along with the backline of Erin SmothersAdriane LathamHaley Salander, and Natalie Miller played all 103 minutes. Willette was credited with three saves in the win, and the defense allowed just eight total shots by Trinity Christian.

St. Ambrose will look to keep pace in the CCAC on Saturday as they travel to first-place Holy Cross for a 10 a.m. start.
