Bees shutout Grand View in season opener

The St. Ambrose women's soccer team traveled to Des Moines, Iowa on Friday night to take on Grand View University. The Bees (1-0) dominated in their season opener, shutting out the Vikings (1-1) on the way to a 4-0 victory at Cownie Soccer Complex.

GVU had early chances to get on the board, but they were turned away by Molly McLaughlin, and Taylor DeSplinter forced a Viking save in the 26th minute. St. Ambrose would find the breakthrough in the 32nd minute as DeSplinter crossed the ball and found Alyssa Schichner for the first Ambrose goal. The Bees would add a second goal just before halftime as Riley Garcia found the back of the net during some chaos after a corner kick in the 42nd minute. 

SAU would continue their momentum in the second half as Tori Timerman scored just three minutes into the half. After her initial shot was saved, Timerman slotted a left-footed shot past Celenka Hommel for a 3-0 Ambrose lead in the 48th minute. Rachel Willette got a save in the 49th minute to keep the shutout going. Keeli Frerichs would add the final tally in the 61st minute, rocketing a shot to the upper left corner. The Vikings had an opportunity to get on the scoreboard in the 80th minute, but Grace Bernard's shot hit off the crossbar. 

Erin SmothersAdriane LathamHaley Salander, and Natalie Miller kept the Grand View offense in check, allowing just six shots on goal. DeSplinter and Morgan Wahlen had three shots each for the Bees. McLaughlin registered three saves in the first half, and Willette recorded four in the win.

SAU will next take on Culver-Stockton on August 31st at 5:00 p.m. for their home opener.
