Bees advance to CCAC semifinals on penalties

Molly McLaughlin saved two Olivet Nazarene penalty attempts, and Lisa Walter converted the fifth attempt for SAU to give the Bees a 0-0 2OT (4-2 PKs) win on Tuesday night at St. Vincent's Athletic Complex in Davenport. The win moves St. Ambrose into the CCAC semifinals.

Erin Smothers was the first up for SAU, but her attempt was saved. ONU then converted on their attempt. Morgan Wahlen was able to beat the keeper for her shootout chance, and McLaughlin saved the attempt for the Tigers. Riley Garcia then put her penalty in the back of the net, and Olivet did as well to make the teams even at two. Mia Lisanti then hit her penalty to the left past the keeper to put the Bees up one. McLaughlin then saved the attempt from ONU's Julia Herrman, giving St. Ambrose a chance to win on the next kick. After the Olivet Nazarene keeper was whistled for leaving too early, Walter slotted home the retry to give SAU the victory.

ONU had the first chance of the game early, but McLaughlin saved the attempt from Abby Cash. Garcia had a chance to get on the board in the 26th minute, but it would hit off the post. The Bees would manage just one shot on goal in the half, and the teams would go to halftime tied.

McLaughlin would make another one of her saves in the 56th minute to keep the Tigers off the board. Garcia had the best chance for the Bees in the second half in the 83rd minute, but her shot was at the keeper.

Neither team managed a shot in the first overtime period, and each team would only have one shot in the second overtime leading to the shootout.

McLaughlin made four saves to go along with her two shootout saves. The backline defense of Smothers, Adriane Latham, Haley Salander, Natalie Miller, and Morgan Vercautren helped the Bees keep ONU off the scoresheet. Mary Evans was a dominant force in the midfield, and Keeli Frerichs supported the SAU backline.

SAU will host Judson University, who upset one-seed Trinity Christian, on Thursday in Davenport at 5 p.m.
