St. Ambrose takes down No. 9 Central Methodist

Four first-half goals proved to be the difference as St. Ambrose held on for the upset, defeating No. 9 Central Methodist, 4-3 on Sunday afternoon in Davenport, Iowa. With the win, SAU made program history as this is the highest ranked team they have beaten.

The Bees got the scoring started early with Mia Lisanti finding the back of the net in the 7th minute off a long pass from Mary Evans. Five minutes later, Lisanti found Morgan Wahlen for the goal to give SAU a 2-0 lead less than 15 minutes into the game. Wahlen would strike again in the 27th minute, scoring with her left foot from outside the box that got over the CMU keeper. Haley Salander put a free-kick into the box that found the head of Keeli Frerichs just a minute later to give the Bees a 4-0 lead. The Eagles had a few chances to get on the board in the first, but the St. Ambrose defense blocked those attempts as SAU would take the four-goal lead into halftime.

The visitors would come out strong in the second, scoring just a few minutes into the half to get a goal back. CMU kept pushing for another goal, but Molly McLaughlin made a sequence of saves to keep the St. Ambrose lead at 4-1. Central Methodist would get goals from Zoe Jessen in the 78th minute and the 82nd minute to cut the deficit to one. But it wasn't enough as the Bees held on in the final minutes to secure the upset.

McLaughlin made seven saves in the win. Senior Lisa Walter was honored before the game for her contributions to the soccer program.

SAU will travel to Governors State on Wednesday, March 17th for a conference contest at 11 a.m.
