Wahlen's penalty kick gives Bees win

Margaret Hamilton drew the foul. Morgan Wahlen converted the penalty. And the Bees came away with a 1-0 victory over Trinity International Saturday afternoon at the St. Vincent's Complex in Davenport, Iowa.

In a game that saw only 11 shots between both teams, a penalty kick was the difference. Hamilton drew a foul in the box in the 56th minute, and Wahlen used her left foot to slot the ball past the keeper.

SAU didn't have many chances the rest of the way, but the defensive line of Erin Smothers, Adriane Latham, Haley Salander, and Natalie Miller & Morgan Vercautren stood strong. The Trojans looked to have tied the game up in the 80th minute from a free-kick, but the goal was ruled offside. The visitors had a chance for a goal late in the game, but the chance went wide, and the Bees held on for the win.

The first half had much of the action coming in the midfield as the teams combined for 11 fouls in the half. St. Ambrose's best opportunities to score came from Riley Garcia and Hamilton, but they were saved as the game would head to the break 0-0.

Molly McLaughlin was credited with two saves in the win.

SAU will host St. Xavier (Ill.) on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Davenport.
