Bees fall at Benedictine

Bees fall at Benedictine

The game that would decide the Heart of America Athletic Conference no. 1 seed on Friday afternoon would eventually go to Benedictine College with a final of 23-4. Both teams were playing with all their marbles on the line to earn the no. 1 seed going into the Heart of America postseason. St. Ambrose could not get over the Benedictine Ravens hump as they are polled #10 in the nation going into this match up. SAU is now (8-2, 4-1) as they enter the conference tournament as the no. 2 seed.

The Ravens scored five early goals in the first and would never allow the Bees to rally back. Sarah Diehl and Katie McGlynn scored back to back goals in the quarter to breathe some life back into the Bees making the game 5-2. The Ravens would go on to score three more goals to end the period at 8-2 and St. Ambrose would never get back within striking distance.

The second period would be much of a similar story with Benedictine scoring five straight goals again. This would extend their lead to 13-2 before the Bees would get on the board again. A goal from Sarah Diehl at the 6:35 mark in the second would take the Bees to a 3-13 score. Diehl would go on again to score the last goal before halftime, this goal being her third of the game for SAU. At half the Ravens led 15-4.

After halftime, the game was all Benedictine as they did not allow another SAU goal for the next 30 minutes. The eventual final was 23-4 as the Bees look for revenge next season.

Sarah Diehl was the leading goal scorer for the Bees with three. Katie McGlynn scored the other. Claire Jeffers tallied an assist.

Claire Jeffers and Abby Taaffe secured two ground balls in the loss.

Saige Carlton played 55:21 minutes in net for the Bees while Julieanna Hess played the remainder 4:39. Carlton gathered 15 saves on the afternoon.

Next, the Bees enter the postseason as the no. 2 seed. SAU will host Culver-Stockton College on Wed., April 17 at 3 p.m. SAU and C-SC played only a week prior with the game becoming a nail biter. St. Ambrose pulled away at the end to win 13-10.
