SAU honors four outstanding seniors for senior day celebration

St. Ambrose women's lacrosse cruised past William Penn on senior day for their third conference victory of the season. The women's lacrosse team honored four seniors on Saturday afternoon, leading to a 17-6 win for the Bees. All seniors were four-year members of the women's lacrosse program. The recognized individuals were as follows: Sophie McPeek, Delaney Austad, Claire Jeffers, and Josie Mork.

The first quarter proved to be a back and forth game for the Bees and Statesmen. Each team exchanging goals after one another. All time career points leader, Lauren Hoesly scored the first goal of the game for the Bees at the 14:57 mark. The Statesmen returned the favor about a minute and a half later to tie the game at one all. The game was tied at 3-3 until Anabelle Brown scored twice to extend the Bees lead to 5-3 just before the second period.

With the Bees leading 5-3 headed into the second quarter, the Statesmen would not go away as they scored the first goal of the second. St. Ambrose would score three consecutive goals to double their lead at 8-4. William Penn scored the last goal of the quarter with :31 seconds left in the period. Before the halftime break, the Bees would lead 8-5.

In the third period, the Bees found their well-oiled offense, scoring five unanswered goals. The five goals coming from Anabelle Brown, Jayden Ambrose (two), and Sarah Diehl (two). These goals allowed SAU a comfortable lead 13-6, headed into the final period of play.

The last period proved to be all St. Ambrose as they dominated, not allowing William Penn to score a single goal to end the game. The Bees would go on to score four more goals for the eventual final, 17-6. This win adds to the first column for a (7-1, 3-0) record.

Anabelle Brown led the way for the Bees offense by scoring five goals and earning one assist. Sarah Diehl was not far behind with four goals and three assists. Jayden Ambrose chipped in two goal and two assists. Lauren Hoesly and Claire Jeffers scored two each. Jeffers also chipped in one assist.

Sophie McPeek collected five ground balls while Claire Jeffers collected four. Ambrose, Brown, and Jeffers all tied for four draw controls each.

Claire Jeffers and Abby Taaffe dominated with four caused turnovers each. Ambrose and Hoesly each had three. Abby Messina, Abby Vanderwarren, Katie McGlynn, and Sophie McPeek each earned two.

Saige Carlton played all 60 minutes in net for SAU. In this time, she collected nine saves and three ground balls.

St. Ambrose connected on 2-3 free position shot attempts.

Next up, the Bees will host conference foe, Culver-Stockton, for their final regular season home game of the year. First draw is slated for 4 p.m. on Wed., Apr. 10.
