Hoesly, Taaffe sweep Heart Player of the Week awards

Abby Taaffe and Lauren Hoesly from St. Ambrose sweep the final 2024 Heart Player of the Week honors, announced on Monday afternoon. This is the second time this season for Hoesly who won the Heart Offensive Player of the Week back on April 1. Taaffe is a first-time winner this year earning Heart Defensive Player of the Week. Both played a pivotal role in helping the Bees earn back to back runner up titles in the Heart Conference Tournaments. The Bees went 1-1 this past week in the conference tournament. SAU defeated no. 3 seeded Culver-Stockton 15-4 in the semifinal before losing to Benedictine, the eventual champions, 18-7.

St. Ambrose’s season ended with a 18-7 loss in the Heart Championship game to the (#5) Benedictine Ravens. SAU ended with a (9-3, 4-1) overall and conference record. Going forward, the Bees continue to look for a way to get over the hump of Benedictine.

The no. 2 seeded Bees are coming off a huge 2024 Heart Semifinal win vs. Culver-Stockton 15-4. This win advances the Bees to the 2024 Heart Championship Final.

Nine Bees earned All-Conference honors in the Heart of America Athletic Conference for the 2023-24 season. Voting compiled of coaches throughout the league. The league announced that Anabelle Brown, Lauren Hoesly, Claire Jeffers, Sophie McPeek, and Abby Taaffe earned first-team honors. Another set of Bees in Jayden Ambrose, Sarah Diehl, Raegan Dotterer, and Josie Mork notched second-team honors. Anabelle Brown tabbed second-team honors in draw control as well.

Freshman, Abby Vanderwarren was named Newcomer Player of the Year, the Heart announced this afternoon. She was voted upon from other coaches within the Heart of America Athletic Conference.

The Heart of America Tournament Semifinal game was all St. Ambrose. The Bees won over Culver-Stockton on Wednesday afternoon 15-4. This improves SAU’s overall record to 9-2. The Bees take home field advantage to another level, tabbing a 6-1 home record this season. St. Ambrose and Culver-Stockton matched up a week ago to this day and that was a back and forth game with the Bees taking the eventual decision 13-10. All thought it would be much similar between the no. 2 seeded Bees and no. 3 seeded Wildcats. However, SAU proved to write a different script.

The game that would decide the Heart of America Athletic Conference no. 1 seed on Friday afternoon would eventually go to Benedictine College with a final of 23-4. Both teams were playing with all their marbles on the line to earn the no. 1 seed going into the Heart of America postseason. St. Ambrose could not get over the Benedictine Ravens hump as they are polled #10 in the nation going into this match up. SAU is now (8-2, 4-1) as they enter the conference tournament as the no. 2 seed.

St. Ambrose (8-2, 4-1) earned the no. 2 seed in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Tournament. The Benedictine Ravens were the no. 1 seed as they swept the conference with five wins. The Ravens are also Heart defending regular season and tournament champions. Culver-Stockton College tabbed the no. 3 seed while William Penn earned the no. 4 spot.

The St. Ambrose Fighting Bees remain in the winning column after a tight knit game throughout on Wednesday afternoon at St. Vincent’s Athletic Complex. The Bees prove time and time again to be dominant in the Heart of America Athletic Conference earning a 13-10 victory over the Culver-Stockton College Wildcats. SAU is now (8-1, 4-0), as they just played their last regular season home game.

St. Ambrose women’s lacrosse cruised past William Penn on senior day for their third conference victory of the season. The women’s lacrosse team honored four seniors on Saturday afternoon, leading to a 17-6 win for the Bees. All seniors were four-year members of the women’s lacrosse program. The recognized individuals were as follows: Sophie McPeek, Delaney Austad, Claire Jeffers, and Josie Mork.

Hoesly scored five goals and tacked on four assists in her team’s 22-7 victory at Mount Mercy on Saturday afternoon. These combined nine points put her atop as the career points leader for St. Ambrose women’s lacrosse. She stands at 150 all time career points with more opportunities to elevate that number.

The Easter weekend did not prove as a distraction to the Bees as they captured yet another conference victory at Mount Mercy. SAU ran away with a 22-7 feat vs. the Mustangs. This puts St. Ambrose at 6-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

Three Bees across both the men's and women's lacrosse programs at St. Ambrose University have rolled past a huge milestone. In their time at St. Ambrose, all have captured 100 career points between goals and assists. One women’s lacrosse player in Anabelle Brown and two men’s lacrosse players in Makaile Shaddix and Isaiah Hahn.

The Bees have been playing stout defense and finding the back of the net to run away with games this past week. Nothing would change when they hosted the Spires of University of Saint Mary Sat. afternoon at St. Vincent’s Athletic Complex. SAU scored 17 unanswered goals to win 20-3 after a running clock for most of the game.

SAU continued its winning ways against Midland on Friday. St. Ambrose collected its fourth victory of the season beating Midland 16-4 at Heedum Field. The Bees had a slower start than normal in the game but hit their stride in the second quarter by scoring eight goals.
