St. Ambrose falls in Heart Championship

St. Ambrose traveled to Atchison, Kan. to face Benedictine College in another conference title game on Saturday. Last season, the two teams squared off for the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) championship, this year it was for the first-ever Heart of America Conference championship in women's lacrosse. SAU dropped the contest, 15-4.

The home team got out to a 2-0 lead before Audrey Warner put the Bees on the board to make it a 2-1 score with 10:21 on the clock in the first quarter. The Ravens went on a four-goal run to push the lead to 6-1 with 5:36 left. SAU battled back with two goals of their own - one from Maddie Wiltrout and the other from Anabelle Brown - for a 6-3 score with 3:41 remaining in the frame. Benedictine would score late in the quarter to take a 7-3 lead into the second.

The Ravens shut out the Bees in the second quarter and netted three goals to take a 10-3 halftime advantage.

Brown made it a 10-4 score to begin the third quarter after converting a free position attempt for St. Ambrose. Benedictine scored twice in the period to take a 12-4 lead with one quarter to go. The Bees would be shut out again, and the Ravens netted three for the 15-4 final.

Wiltrout won three draw controls and collected four ground balls to go with her score. She also recorded three caused turnovers. Wiltrout and Brown each had seven shot attempts. Warner had five, and Claire Jeffers had three. Lauren Hoesly and Rea-Samone Brown also recorded shots. Abby Taaffe had two caused turnovers while Warner, Saige Carlton, and Hannah Reynolds each had one. Maggie Samson had 12 saves.

St. Ambrose ends their season at 8-7.
