Bees get No. 2 seed in Heart with win over Wildcats

St. Ambrose locked up the No. 2 seed in the Heart of America conference tournament with a 17-6 win over Culver-Stockton Saturday evening in Canton, Missouri.

Maddie Wiltrout scored a game-high seven goals, and Anabelle Brown won 11 draw controls to help SAU control the game. The Bees outscored the Wildcats 16-3 in the first three quarters.

Wiltrout scored three of her seven goals in the first quarter with Audrey Warner and Brown finding the back of the net as well for SAU. Culver-Stockton got a score from Melanie Sanchez as St. Ambrose headed into the second with a 5-1 lead.

The Wildcats scored the first goal of the second quarter to make it 5-2, but the Bees answered with a 6-0 run to close out the period. Brown and Wiltrout each scored twice, and Mackenzie Zions and Jayden Ambrose added goals to give St. Ambrose an 11-2 halftime lead.

SAU dominated the third quarter as well, getting scores from Warner, Hannah Reynolds, Wiltrout, and Delaney Austad to push the lead to 15-2 with 3:55 left in the quarter. Culver-Stockton tallied a goal, but Brown countered with another score for a thirteen-goal lead heading into the final frame.

Wiltrout was the lone scorer for SAU in the fourth, and the Wildcats tacked on three goals for the 17-6 final.

Wiltrout finished with seven goals, one assist, three ground balls, and five draw controls. Brown had three goals, three assists, five ground balls, 11 draw controls, and a game-high three caused turnovers. Lauren Hoesly also added three assists for SAU.

Maggie Samson made eight saves in the first half, and Saige Carlton made one in the second half.

St. Ambrose will now host William Penn, the third seed, in the semifinals of the Heart of America Conference tournament on Wednesday, April 19th at 7 p.m. SAU won the regular-season matchup in Oskaloosa, 15-11.

The winner of SAU/WP will face either No. 1 Benedictine or No. 4 Culver-Stockton in the Championship on Saturday, April 22nd.
