SAU gets road win over William Penn

Maddie Wiltrout broke a 7-7 tie in the third quarter as St. Ambrose came away with a 15-11 road victory over William Penn Wednesday night in Oskaloosa, Iowa. The win gives SAU their second win in the Heart of America conference.

The Bees were in control early, gaining a 5-3 advantage after one quarter. Anabelle Brown (twice), Audrey Warner (twice), and Wiltrout scored in the period.

Warner added to the lead in the second, making it 6-3 with 13:43 left until halftime. William Penn finished the quarter on a 3-0 run to send the teams to the break deadlocked at six.

Claire Jeffers put the Bees ahead in the third, but the Statesmen answered back for a 7-7 tie with 12:18 remaining in the quarter. SAU had a person advantage, and Warner found Wiltrout with 8:44 to go for an 8-7 St. Ambrose lead. Warner and Brown followed with scores that put the Bees up 10-7 with 6:21 left in the frame. William Penn got one back to cut the deficit to two, but Brown found Lauren Hoesly to give SAU an 11-8 lead heading into the fourth.

The Bees continued to score in the final frame with Brown, Warner, and then Brown again finding the back of the net to push the lead to 14-8 with 9:59 to go. The Statesmen got two scores to make it 14-10, but Brown scored her sixth goal of the game with 6:46 to go for a five-goal lead. William Penn would add one more for the 15-11 final.

Brown led the way with six goals and one assist, while Warner added five goals and three assists. Wiltrout had two goals, Jeffers scored one, and Hoesly added a goal and an assist.

Maggie Samson was credited with five saves in the win. St. Ambrose caused seven turnovers as a team with Jeffers, Wiltrout (two), Cece Kowalczyk, Morgan O'Malley, Abby Taaffe, and Abigail Varkalis providing the defensive effort.

SAU will face Ottawa on Thursday, April 6th at 5 p.m. in Davenport.
