Second-half surge puts Bees past Pride

St. Ambrose scored 13 goals in the second half on their way to a 21-10 victory over Clarke University on Tuesday afternoon in Davenport to claim their first Heart of American Conference victory.

Leading 8-6 at the break, Anabelle Brown pushed the lead to three off a pass from Maddie Wiltrout with 11:16 remaining in the quarter. Clarke answered back with a score of their own to make it a two-goal game. SAU went on a 3-0 run with Wiltrout and Audrey Warner (twice) finding the back of the net to take a 12-7 lead with 4:35 on the clock. The Pride notched another score in the quarter, but goals from Lauren Hoesly, Wiltrout, and Hannah Reynolds closed out the quarter to give the Bees a 15-8 lead heading to the fourth.

Reynolds started the fourth the way she ended the third, with a score, to push the SAU lead to eight. Clarke cut back into the lead with a goal from Emily Moran, but Claire Jeffers netted back-to-back scores to give St. Ambrose an 18-9 lead with 6:52 to go. The Pride got one more score to make it 18-10 with 5:37 on the clock. The Bees closed out the game on a 3-0 run with scores from Wiltrout (twice) and Brown for the 21-10 final.

St. Ambrose looked to be in control early on, taking a 6-1 lead on a Hoesly to Wiltrout score with 3:47 left in the first quarter. Clarke scored late in the period to make it a four-goal game heading into the second.

The Pride made it 6-4 with 7:55 until halftime, but Wiltrout and Mackenzie Zions scored to push the SAU lead back to four with 6:18 left. Clarke closed out the quarter with two goals for the 8-6 halftime score.

Wiltrout had a game-high seven goals to go along with two assists and seven draw-control wins. Warner scored four, and Brown, Hoesly, Jeffers, Reynolds, and Zions each scored twice. Hoesly had a game-high five assists. Abby Taaffe had a team-high four ground balls and a game-high three caused turnovers. Maggie Samson made eight saves, and Saige Carlton recorded six.

St. Ambrose will be back at home on Friday, March 31st at 6 p.m. to take on Benedictine in a conference contest. SAU will play at home on Saturday, April 1st as well, facing Lewis University.
