SAU women's lacrosse in Florida for Spring Break

St. Ambrose is down in Florida for Spring Break, entering the games with a 3-0 record. The Bees will play three games in three days, facing two top-10 teams in the NAIA.

Monday, March 20
No. 8 Ave Maria 21, (RV) St. Ambrose 11

SAU faced a tough test to begin its Spring Break trip, facing No. 8 Ave Maria. The Bees went down 8-0 before Audrey Warner found Mackenzie Zions for an 8-1 first quarter deficit. St. Ambrose netted four goals in the second - two from Anabelle Brown, one from Maddie Wiltrout, and one from Warner - but the home team also scored four as SAU would be down 12-5 at the break. St. Ambrose scored six goals in the second half, but it wasn't enough as Ave Maria would take a 21-11 win. Brown had a team-high three goals, while Warner, Wiltrout, and Zions each scored two. Delaney Austad was the other Bee scorer. Brown tied a game-high with seven draw controls, with Wiltrout having four. Maggie Samson made 10 saves, and Saige Carlton was credited with one.

Tuesday, March 21
No. 1 Keiser 18, (RV) St. Ambrose 6

St. Ambrose took an early lead over the No. 1 team in the NAIA on a score from Audrey Warner just 31 seconds into the match. Keiser responded with three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead after the first. Abigail Varkalis started the second with a score for the Bees to cut the lead to one, but the Seahawks rattled off 11 straight goals spanning the second and third quarters. Anabelle Brown scored late in the third to make it 14-3 going into the final frame. SAU went on a three-goal run to start the fourth with Warner (twice) and Maddie Wiltrout finding the back of the net to make it 14-6. Keiser went on a four-goal run of their own to close out the match. Maggie Samson made 10 saves, and Saige Carlton made two. 

Wednesday, March 22
St. Thomas 15, (RV) St. Ambrose 11

The first and third quarters proved to be costly for SAU in their final game down in Florida. St. Thomas raced out to a 4-0 lead at the end of the first. The Bees would find their rhythm in the second going on a four-goal run of their own. Scores from Claire Jeffers, Anabelle Brown, Audrey Warner, and Maddie Wiltrout tied the game at 4-4 with 9:19 left until the break. STU took the lead back on a goal from Kaitlyn Chmelir, but SAU responded with goals by Warner and Brown to take their first lead of the game at 6-5 with 4:36 remaining until the half. Chmelir scored again for the Bobcats for the 6-6 halftime score. The home team went on a 6-1 run in the third quarter to take a 12-7 lead into the final frame. Wiltrout scored for the Bees in the third. Warner made it 12-8 after her free position goal, but STU went on another goal-scoring run to take a 15-8 lead with 10:27 left in the game. St. Ambrose closed out the match on a three-goal run of their own with Abigail Varkalis, Wiltrout, and Hannah Reynolds finding the back of the net for the 15-11 finals. Wiltrout won a game-high seven draws with Brown just behind with six wins. Maggie Samson finished with 11 saves. 

 

The Bees will come home to take on Clarke University on Sunday, March 26th at 3 p.m.
