SAU wins season opener against Midland

St. Ambrose won their season opener Friday afternoon, defeating Midland University, 12-7, at the St. Vincent's Athletic Complex in Davenport.

The Bees (1-0) got off to a strong start, with Audrey Warner and Maddie Wiltrout finding the back of the net to take a 2-0 lead with 8:00 left in the first quarter. Sarah Diehl would find Anabelle Brown with one second left in the frame to give SAU a three-goal lead heading into the next period.

The Warriors (0-1) made it 3-2 after goals from Paige Bolton, but SAU would follow with goals from Diehl and Hannah Reynolds to make it 5-2 with 6:01 until halftime. Bolton would score another for Midland as St. Ambrose would lead by two at the break.

Diehl got the scoring started in the third, and Warner would follow to push the St. Ambrose lead to four with 12:41 to go in the quarter. Wiltrout would score a free position goal in between goals from Midland for a 8-5 lead with 6:22 remaining. Midland would score with one second left to make it a two-goal game heading into the final frame.

St. Ambrose went on a four-goal run, getting scores from Brown, Mackenzie Zions, Jayden Ambrose, and Warner to make it 12-6 with 6:28 to go. Midland would add a free postition goal to account for the final score.

Warner led the way for SAU with three goals and one assist. Lauren Hoesly notched two assists, and Wiltrout won seven draws to go along with a two-goal, one-assist performance. Maggie Samson got the win in net, recording four saves.

St. Ambrose will travel to Marion on Friday, March 10th for a 6 p.m. game.
