St. Ambrose falls in KCAC title game to Benedictine

After an upset victory over No. 8 Missouri Baptist on Thursday, St. Ambrose (12-4) just couldn't keep up with No. 6 Benedictine (13-1) in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) title game. The Ravens scored 11 goals in the first quarter on the way to a 20-6 win in the championship.

Maddie Wiltrout got the Bees on the board first, but Benedictine scored seven straight to take a 7-1 lead with 9:01 left in the first quarter. Morgan Curzon made it 7-2 with 8:54 to go, but the Ravens responded quickly with a goal from KCAC Player of the Year Natalie Wechter to take a six goal lead with 8:31 left in the frame. Benedictine would score three goals in less than 30 seconds to take a 10-2 lead with 4:17 to go. Audrey Warner got one back for SAU, but Wechter notched another to give BC an 11-3 lead heading into the second quarter.

Warner scored for the Bees just 30 seconds into the quarter to cut the deficit to seven, but Benedictine would close out the quarter on a 4-0 run to take a 15-4 halftime lead.

The third quarter saw just one goal apiece for each team, with Wiltrout finding the back of the net in the period for St. Ambrose to make it 16-5 heading into the final frame. The Ravens rattled off four straight goals in the final quarter to make it 20-5 with 3:25 left in the game. Allie Ruggerio would score a free position attempt for SAU to account for the final score.

Maggie Samson was credited with eight saves in the loss. Katie Burr and Julieanna Hess also saw time in goal for the Bees. Sarah Diehl picked up a team-high four ground balls, Samson and Abby Taaffe collected two, while Ruggerio, Curzon Alivia UebersetzigMaura HealyLauren HoeslyClaire Jeffers, and Hannah Reynolds picked up two. Wiltrout won six draws, and Healy caused a team-high two turnovers.

St. Ambrose will wait and see if they receive an at-large bid to the NAIA Women's Lacrosse Tournament.
