St. Ambrose moves on to semis with win over Culver-Stockton

St. Ambrose will play in the KCAC Tournament semifinals after defeating Culver-Stockton College, 17-2, on Saturday afternoon at the St. Vincent's Athletic Complex in Davenport. 

The Bees got off to a strong start, with Audrey Warner netting the first two goals of the game. Delaney Austad made it 3-0 with 8:47 left in the first quarter. Austad then found Lauren Koutouzis for the score and a four-goal lead. Austad scored again (from Morgan Curzon), and Warner scored on a free position attempt to give SAU a 6-0 lead heading into the second quarter. 

St. Ambrose made it 9-0 with 6:38 left until halftime with scores from Curzon (from Koutouzis), Maura Healy, and Anabelle Brown (from Maddie Wiltrout). The visitors would get on the board with a man-up goal from McKayla Nevarez to make it 9-1 at the break. 

Culver-Stockton got another goal from Nevarez coming out of the break to make it a seven-score game. SAU would answer back as Curzon forced a turnover in the Wildcats' defensive end, picked up the ground ball, raced toward the net, and put a shot past the keeper to make it 10-2 with 12:35 left in the third quarter. Koutouzis scored her second of the day on a free position shot for a nine-goal lead, and Curzon got on the board again to make it 12-2 heading into the final frame. 

SAU would outscore CSC 6-0 in the final quarter, while allowing only one shot by the visitors in the period. Lauren Hoesly found Mackenzie Zions to push the lead to 11. Wiltrout and Koutouzis scored off free position attempts to make it 15-2 with 6:26 left in the game. Austad would find the back of the net off a feed from Brown, and Hannah Reynolds would net the final goal for the 17-2 final. 

Austad, Curzon, Koutouzis, and Warner each netted a hat-trick in the win. Wiltrout won 10 of St. Ambrose's 16 draw controls. Curzon and Claire Jeffers won two, and Brown and Alivia Uebersetzig had the other wins. 

The Bee defense was stellar, allowing just eight shots by the Wildcats. Curzon had a game-high three caused turnovers, and Wiltrout had two. Abby Taaffe and Curzon had a game-high five ground balls. Sarah Diehl, Healy, and Wiltrout picked up three. Maggie Samson was credited with two saves in the win, and Katie Burr recorded one. 

SAU will face off against the No. 2 seed Missouri Baptist Spartans on Thursday, April 21st at 1 p.m. in Atchinson, Kansas. MBU took the regular season matchup 11-9, on March 19th.
