Second half surge lifts SAU over WPU

A 12-goal second-half gave St. Ambrose just enough to get past William Penn, 15-13, Tuesday night at the St. Vincent's Athletic Complex in Davenport. SAU is now 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the KCAC.

After being shut out in the second quarter and down six goals, the Bees came out of halftime with a vengeance. Audrey Warner cut the William Penn lead to 9-4 after scoring with 11:57 remaining in the third. Maddie Wiltrout added a goal four and a half minutes later to cut the deficit to four. The Bees got free position goals from Warner, Maura Healy, and Warner again to make it 9-8 WPU with 2:50 left in the third quarter. Wiltrout would even up the scoreboard with 41 seconds left. SAU allowed just three shots in the period.

St. Ambrose took the lead just 8 seconds in the fourth with Lauren Hoesly finding Morgan Curzon for the 10-9 lead. Hoesly would team up with Wiltrout just 22 seconds later to give the Bees a two-goal lead with 14:20 to go. Curzon would find the back of the net on a free position shot two minutes later to make it 12-9, but William Penn got a goal from Bailee Royal to make it a two-score game with 11:55 left. The visitors would fight back, with Bailee Royal scoring less than a minute later to cut the lead to four. William Penn would add two more goals, but the SAU defense would hang on for the 15-13 victory.

The Bees took an early 2-0 lead on goals from Anabelle Brown and Warner, but William Penn scored twice for a 2-2 score with 2:49 left in the first quarter. Hoesly teamed up with Sarah Diehl to give St. Ambrose a 3-2 lead, but WPU scored with 1:18 remaining to make it 3-3 heading into the second quarter where SAU was outscored 6-0.
