SAU stung by Spartans in semifinals

The Bees never could quite get it going Thursday night in Atchison, Kansas. St. Ambrose (12-2) outshout Missouri Baptist 39-25 (10-2) but they couldn't find the goals they needed as the Spartans came away with a 12-10 victory in the KCAC Semifinals.

Down 7-5 at halftime, Maddie Wiltrout scored a goal 10 minutes into the second half and Lauren Hoesly found Mackenzie Zions less than a minute later to get the game to even. Missouri Baptist would go on a four-goal run in two-minutes to push their lead to 11-7. St. Ambrose fought through as Wiltrout got a goal back with 14:07 remaining. The Bees would get two man-down goals - one from Audrey Warner (assist from Lauren Koutouzis) and one from Wiltrout - just 25 seconds apart to cut the lead to one with 9:13 to go. Ashley Avery would push the lead back to two for the Spartans, tallying a goal with 7:59 left for the 12-10 lead. SAU had chances in the last five minutes, but Katie Baranski's free position shot was saved and Wiltrout had an attempt go wide and another get saved.

Wiltrout got the Bees on the board first, scoring on a free position shot just over a minute into the game. St. Ambrose saw their early one-goal lead disappear as Missouri Baptist would score six unanswered goals to take a 6-1 lead with 9:24 to go in the first half. Hoesly would stop the run, getting a goal off a feed from Baranski. A minute later, Warner would find the back of the net for a 6-3 deficit with 8:08 remaining. The Spartans would add a goal from Kamryn Bell to up their lead to four. Wiltrout scored on two consecutive free position shots to end the half with SAU down 7-5.

The Bees won 18 draw controls, but couldn't finish on free position attempts going 4-14 on the night. Wiltrout finished with a game-high six goals. Maggie Samson made six saves in the loss.

St. Ambrose ends their season at 12-2, while Missouri Baptist moves to 10-2 and will play in the KCAC Championship on Saturday.
