Bees win first CCAC Women's Golf Championship

With all five players contributing, St. Ambrose claimed its first-ever CCAC Women's Golf Championship. The Bees held off Olivet Nazarene by four shots to win the conference crown at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.

It is the program's first conference championship since the 2010 team won the Midwest Collegiate Conference title.

The Bees got off to a great start in the two-day event. Behind Aleanna Mendoza, Amara Lytle and Katherine Speer, St. Ambrose built an 11-shot lead after Monday's opening round.

Mendoza shot an 85 to sit in second place, Lytle was a shot back with an 86 in third and Speer was in fourth with an 88. That helped SAU card a first-round 351, which proved to be the best round of the tournament.

Then while Mendoza and Lytle slid back towards the field, it was Gabrielle Langlois and Anna Hurning who stepped up alongside Speer to hold off the Tigers in the second round.

Speer was the team's most consistent player, carding rounds of 88 and 89 for a 177 that left her as the CCAC runner-up with a 177. Langlois followed a first-round 92 with an 86 to climb into a four-way tie for third place with a 178. And Hurning, who shot a 98 Monday, cut seven shots Tuesday, closing with a 91 for a 189 that gave her a share of 11th place.

Lytle and Mendoza tied for ninth overall with matching 186s as all five Bees finished inside the top 11.

Olivet Nazarene, led by individual medalist Mara Bakke (83-83=166), made things interesting but ultimately couldn't catch St. Ambrose. SAU finished with a 717 (351-366) while ONU took second with a 721 (362-359). Judson finished third and Saint Xavier was fourth.

After competing in the Augustana Viking Invitational at Highland Springs in Rock Island, Ill., Friday and Saturday, the Bees will turn their attention to the NAIA Championships. St. Ambrose will serve as host of the four-day national tournament played at TPC Deere Run May 14-17.
