Speer ties for second at Viking Invitational

In a final tune-up before the NAIA Championships, St. Ambrose placed three inside the top 12 at the Augustana Viking Invitational at Highland Springs in Rock Island, Ill., Friday and Saturday.

Katherine Speer fired a pair of collegiate-best rounds to tie for second, Amara Lytle earned her fifth top-10 finish of the season, and Kara Williams shot a collegiate-best round to tie for 12th. It all helped St. Ambrose shoot its best score of the year.

Speer had a collegiate-best 79 Friday afternoon and then backed up that with a 75 Saturday. Her 154 was good to give her a share of runner-up honors, just two shots behind Augustana's Avery Frick for individual medalist honors. Speer's finish came on the heels of a third-place showing at the CCAC Championships.

Lytle carded rounds of 81 and 83 for her 164. That earned her a 10th-place finish. After an opening-round 86, Williams shot an 80, her best score at SAU. Her 166 was also a collegiate best and put her in a tie for 12th.

Audrey McAleer shot a 175 (87-88) and Leah Sullivan fired a 183 (94-89) for St. Ambrose.

The Bees put together rounds of 333 and 326 for a 659. That was the team's best round of the year, bettering the group's 668 to open the year at the Highland Classic. SAU finished fourth. Augustana won the eight-team event with a 624 (320-304).

Three other Bees competed as individuals. Aiko Mendoza came in with a 186 (94-92), Emma Peters shot a 192 (91-101) and Aleanna Mendoza carded an opening-round 94.

St. Ambrose will now prepare for the NAIA Championships May 23-26 at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.
