Augustana clips St. Ambrose 6-4 in match play competition

St. Ambrose came up a little short in a match play event held at Duran Golf Club in Viera, Fla., falling 6-4.

The Fighting Bees took an early 2-0 lead with both Maitlyn Sanders and Amara Lytle winning their matches in the opening group. Sanders made a clutch par save from the fairway bunker on the challenging 18th hole at Duran to secure a 1-up victory. Lytle led a close match the entire day and was able to close out the match on 17.

Augustana quickly closed the gap with two wins over Katherine Speer and Sam Cramer in the second group to tie the match at 2-2.

In the third group, Kara Williams battled all day long, overcoming a 2-hole deficit with three to play to secure a tie and a half point. Leah Sullivan was also locked in a back-and-forth match before eventually coming up just short.

Emma Cameron fought back from a 4-down start, but the comeback wasn't quite enough in the end. Audrey McAleer secured an important half point by tying her match as darkness approached.

In the final group of the day featuring Brooke Dross and Alexis Dross, Alexis won her match in dominating fashion, giving the Bees their final point of the afternoon.

SAU returns home to compete in the Deere Run Invitational at TPC Deere Run Mar. 29-30.
