Sanders fifth, Meils sixth at season-ending Viking Invite

Maitlyn Sanders finished fifth and Becki Meils took sixth as St. Ambrose placed third at the season-ending Augustana Viking Invitational Sunday.

Sanders opened with an 85 Saturday at Highland Springs Golf Course in Rock Island, Ill. She came back with the team's best round of the day, firing a second-round 80 to finish with a 165 and a top-5 finish.

Meils ended a stroke behind her teammate. She carded a first-round 79, SAU's best round of the event, before slipping slightly with an 87 to finish with her 166.

Sam Cramer earned a top-15 finish. Rounds of 86 and 87 gave her a 173, good for a tie for 14th overall. Abi Scheidecker shot a 180 (92-88) and Nicole Gordus came in with a 187 (96-91) for the Bees.

St. Ambrose took third in the seven-team tournament after back-to-back 342s led to a 684 final. The Bees finished just a single shot behind the second-place Augustana B team.

Kara Williams and Katherine Speer helped a second St. Ambrose team place sixth.

Williams closed with an 85 that gave her a 178 total to place 19th. Speer had rounds of 92-87 for a 179 and a tie for 20th.

Leah Sullivan shot a 193 (97-96) and Emma Cameron finished with a 203 (108-95).

The SAU B team had a 753 total (390-363).

Augustana won its own invitational with a 652. Caraline Oakley, from Washington-St. Louis, was the individual medalist after shooting a 10-over 154 (75-79).
