Bowlers compete in Mid-States Championship

The St. Ambrose bowlers competed this past weekend in Wichita, Kan., at the annual Mid-States Championship.

The women qualified fifth in the 24-team field, advancing to the eight-team elimination bracket. There, they knocked off Oklahoma Christian 3-2 before falling to top-seed Mount Mercy 3-0 in the semifinals. Newman University went on to defeat Mount Mercy for the championship. The top-three seeds were Mount Mercy (9379), Newman (9323) and Wichita State (9246). St. Ambrose toppled 9080 pins in qualifying fifth.

Team members included Kayla Devine (1113-six games), Erin Williams (1105-six games), Noelle Phillips (1072-six games), Marissa Bills (1021-six games), Tricia Alvarado (513-three games), Sammy Upham (325-two games), Amanda Bohn (123-one game) and Madison Holevoet.

The men qualified in second place, although 616 pins behind defending national champions Wichita State. SAU did, however, outdistance everyone else by 438 pins. The top-three seeds were Wichita State (11,331), St. Ambrose (10,715) and Mount Mercy (10,277).

In the bracket, the Bees fell in the opening round to No. 7-seed Newman University 3-1.

Cameron Crowe (1374-six games) finished in second place, averaging 229 to lead the SAU men's squad. Other team members included Lucas Finley (1316-six games), Kendric Siders (1282-six games), Devin Richards (848-four games), Justin Aboud (1205-six games), Pedro Irizarry (162-one game), Lucas Hersrud (181-one game) and Will Young.

The men's JV squad also competed in the event. They finished eighth in a field of 14 JV teams. The top-three teams were Wichita State (10,210), Oklahoma-Christian (9819) and Newman University (9779). St. Ambrose shot 9412. Team members were Nicholas Kidd (1208-six games), Jaxon Robinson (1180-six games), Anthony Mastroianni (1108-six games), Raiden Nakagawa (707-four games), Brendan DeWerth (562-three games), Logan Boll (334-two games), Alex Nolan (321-two games) and Zack Olkiewicz (132-one game).

All varsity and JV squads are in action this weekend at the annual Five Seasons Classic in Cedar Rapids.
