SAU Bowling wraps up first semester at Warhawk Open

The men and women of St. Ambrose wrapped up a successful first semester at this weekend's Warhawk Open in Addison, Ill. After qualifying second in a 25-team field, the St Ambrose men suffered an opening-round defeat to No. 7-seeded Saint Xavier 2-1. No. 6-seeded Marian-Wisconsin defeated No. 8-seeded St. Francis-Illinois to claim the championship.

The top three qualifiers after six traditional games on Saturday and 16 baker games on Sunday were Mount Mercy (9591), St. Ambrose (9472) and Wisconsin-Whitewater (9393).

Ryan Speer led all scorers with a six-game total of 1375, which placed him second in the field, just four pins behind the tournament winner. It marked the first All-Tournament Team performance for the freshman from Indianapolis. Other varsity bowlers were Cameron Crowe (1306-6), Zach Greim (1217-6), Jordan Monnens (987-5), Justin Aboud (783-4), Zack Denton (380-2) and William Jones (159-1).

St Ambrose had two men's JV teams competing as well. JV1 qualified second in the 15-team JV field. They stopped Wisconsin-Whitewater JV1 2-1 in the semifinals before losing to No. 3-seeded Wisconsin-Whitewater JV2 in the title tilt 2-0. JV2 placed seventh. The top three qualifiers were Calumet (8898), St. Ambrose (8887) and Wisconsin-Whitewater JV2 (8673).

Men's JV1 team members were Corey Roth (1290-6), Anthony Mastroianni (1210-6), Alton Barber (916-5), Alex Nolan (782-4), Justin Kennedy (523-3), Caleb Gillmore (508-3), Mitchel Guzzle (424-2) and Brendan DeWerth (126-1).

Men's JV2 totaled 8202 for their event. Team members included Adam Kowalik (1122-6), Josh Prowse (1073-6), Zack Olkiewicz (1040-6), Thomas Cutsforth (1028-6), William Jones (784-4) and Chase Jamison (254-2).

The St. Ambrose women finished in 11th place in the 24-team field. The top three qualifiers were Mount Mercy (8659), William Penn (8581) and St. Francis (8376). SAU totaled 8022. No. 8-seeded Davenport University bested No. 2-seeded William Penn in the championship match. Fighting Bee team members were Marissa Bills (1167-6), Samantha Upham (964-5), Noelle Phillips (882-5), Sarah Fox (804-5), Erin Williams (679-4), Kayla Devine (479-3) and Amanda Bohn (293-2).

Womens's JV finished in fifth place in the seven-team field with a total of 7344. The top three qualifiers were St. Francis (8074), Mount Mercy (8055) and Wisconsin-Whitewater JV2 (7641). Bee JV team members were Tricia Alvarado (1018-6), Sam Rodenbostel (959-6), Maddie Ksobiech (837-5), Kayla Lampe (780-5), Lindsey Voss (612-4) and Makenna Verdon (549-4).

Both men's and women's varsity squads return Jan. 14-15 for the Tier 1 Kegel Classic in Addison, Ill.
