Women claim runner-up at Tier 1 Mid-States, men knocked out in semifinals

The St. Ambrose women continued their great start to the 2022-23 bowling season. After finishing runner-up two weeks ago in Wisconsin, they ventured to the 63rd Annual Mid-States Tournament in Wichita, Kan. And in another Tier 1 event, they were able to post another runner-up finish.

St. Ambrose qualified in third place in the 25-team field, and then advanced to the title tilt by storming from behind from an 0-2 deficit to knock off Lindenwood University 3-2, and then stopping William Penn 3-0 in the semifinal contest. The Bees faced Oklahoma Christian in the title match, ultimately falling 3-0 to earn their runner-up finish.

The top three seeds after 50 total games were Wichita State (9473), Mount Mercy (9300), and Oklahoma Christian (9087). St. Ambrose qualified fourth with a pinfall total of 2060. 

Member of the women's quad and their Saturday totals included Erin Williams (1118-6 games), Marissa Bills (1062-6 games), Samantha Upham (975-5 games), Kayla Devine (640-4 games), Bailey Tripilas (492-3 games), Amanda Bohn (335-2 games), Tricia Alvarado (332-2 games) and Noelle Phillips (159-1 game). 

The men enjoyed their best finish of the season at the Mid-States Tournament. They put on a great charge during Sunday's baker competition, averaging 225 for their 20 baker games, and surging from seventh place into second place after qualifying in the 31-team varsity field.

The top three seeds were Wichita State (11250), St. Ambrose (10681) and Newman University (10625). The Bees came from behind to knock off No. 7 seed Iowa Western 3-2 but were then stopped 3-1 by No. 3 seed Newman University. Wichita State beat Newman 3-0 to capture the title. A total of 31 men's varsity teams competed in the event.

The SAU men's varsity team members were Zach Greim (1311-6 games), Ryan Speer (1264-6 games), Justin Aboud (1147-6 games), Jordan Monnens (861-4 games), Ashton Yamasaki (859-4 games), Zack Denton (371-2 games) and William Jones (366-2 games).

The men's junior varsity squad also competed, placing fourth in a field of 12 JV teams. Wichita States defeated Lindenwood in the JV championship roll-off.

St. Ambrose team members included Jorell Morris (1245-6 games), Corey Roth (1124-6 games), Alex Nolan (922-4 games), Anthony Mastroianni (895-5 games), Brendan DeWerth (591-3 games), Justin Kennedy (471-3 games), Caleb Gillmore (326-2 games) and Alton Barber (159-1 game).

Teams continue their campaign in two weeks at the Five Seasons Classic on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 29-30, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
