Men defend Kohawk championship; Monnens fires 300

The SAU men brought home their fourth title of the 2021-22 season by successfully defending their Kohawk Invitational Championship this past weekend.

Competing in a field of 18 teams, St. Ambrose led by 102 pins after Saturday's five-team games. Then, they averaged more than 221 to pull away from the field, leading the event by 421 pins. The top three qualifiers were St. Ambrose (8954), Mount Mercy (8533) and Baker University (7938). In the four-team best-of-3 elimination finals, St.Ambrose eliminated No. 4 seed Waldorf 2-0, and then turned back Baker University 2-0 in the championship match. 

Nate Stubler earned his third individual tournament win of the season by averaging 248 for his five games. Stubler's pinfall total was 1242. Other teammates included Cameron Crowe (1207-five games), Jordan Monnens (855-four games), Dakota Solonka (790-four games), William Jones (594-three games), Zach Greim (376-two games) and Corey Roth (352-two games).

Jordan Monnens thrilled the crowd with a 300 game on Saturday. This was just the second perfect game in the 13-season history of the SAU bowling program. Brent Boho fired the first 300 game in program history at the 2018 National Match Games Tournament in Fairview Heights, Ill.

Three of the five players on the men's all-tournament team were Fighting Bee bowlers. In addition to Stubler's win, Crowe earned runner-up honors, while Justin Aboud placed fifth in the event with 1155 for his five games. 

The men's JV turned in a dominant performance, but were knocked off in the championship tilt 2-0 by No. 2 seed Mount Mercy, resulting in a runner-up finish. The top-three qualifiers in the eight-team field were St. Ambrose (8546), Mount Mercy (8189) and St. Ambrose JV2 (7486).

JV1 team members included Aboud, Jorell Morris (1106-five games), Joshua Collins (1099-five games), Alex Nolan (689-three games), Caleb Gillmore (152-one game), Seth Sikkema (146-one game) and Adam Kowalik.

The SAU women placed third in a 17-team field. The top-three qualifiers were Baker University (8245), Mount Mercy (8208) and St. Ambrose 8137. St. Ambrose lost an exciting match to Mount Mercy in their semifinal match 2-1. 

Freshman Tricia Alvarado earned her first all-tournament team berth by averaging 220 for her five games (1100 pins). Joining her on the all-tournament team was Addy Nelson, who finished fifth with a 1055 pinfall for her five games. Other women on the SAU varsity squad were Kayla Devine (1042-five games), Megan Hess (1023-five games), Bailey Tripilas (473-three games) and Sammy Upham (306-two games).

The women's JV squad finished sixth out of eight teams. Team members were Jackie Juett (894-five games), Madisyn Bradford (829-five games), Hailee Hospodar (799-five games), Lindsey Voss (768-five games) and Kayla Lampe (740-five games).

The varsity teams will compete in their final regular-season event of the season Feb. 19-20 at the Hoosier Classic in Indianapolis, Ind. Sectional assignments will be announced live on BOWLTV on Wednesday, Feb. 23, at 5 p.m.
