Pair of double-doubles not enough in loss to Lakers

Despite a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double from Abby Wolter and a 14-point, 11-board performance from Caitlyn Thole, St. Ambrose fell at home to Roosevelt 75-58 Wednesday night.

The Bee duo combined for more than half of the team's total points and pulled down 21 of the group's 34 total rebounds.

But on a night when neither team shot better than 44 percent from the floor, the difference came from beyond the arc.

Roosevelt (15-10, 13-4 CCAC) knocked down 13 triples in 35 attempts while St. Ambrose finished just 4-of-18 from 3-point range. The Lakers connected on eight 3-pointers in the first half, including a 4-of-9 effort in the second quarter that saw RU pull ahead for good.

Allie Govert had tied the game at 17-17 with a layup late in the opening quarter as part of a strong start for SAU. But the Lakers scored the final five points of the first period and the first five of the second to grab a 44-29 halftime advantage.

Thole and Wolter combined for the first six points of the third quarter as St. Ambrose (6-16, 6-11 CCAC) climbed back to within 44-35, and minutes later, a Thole three-point play cut the margin to 49-41. Roosevelt again had the answer, hitting a pair of threes as part of an 8-0 run that restored a 57-41 lead.

SAU made one final push in the final frame, getting to within 64-56 on a Wolter layup with 3:40 to go before RU sealed the win with nine straight points to go in front 73-56 with less than a minute remaining.

Behind Wolter and Thole, Kashell Daughty and Elly Doe each scored eight points. Kaitlyn Brunson netted seven and Govert finished with five. Brunson handed out a team-best four assists in the loss.

St. Ambrose will play its final home game of the season Saturday when the Bees host Indiana Northwest on Senior Day.
