St. Ambrose unable to hold onto halftime lead

A 10-minute scoring drought bridging the third and fourth quarters was the difference as St. Ambrose fell at Governors State 60-51 Wednesday night.

Facing one of the top teams in the conference, the Bees led 27-26 at the half and grabbed a 30-28 lead when Kaitlyn Brunson knocked down a 3-pointer in the opening seconds of the third quarter. A minute later, Kashell Daughty's layup gave SAU a 32-30 lead.

St. Ambrose (6-14, 6-9 CCAC) would not score another point in the third.

SAU would miss its final 13 field goal attempts and a pair of free throws over the final eight minutes of the period. Governors State (18-5, 12-3 CCAC) capitalized, outscoring St. Ambrose 18-5 in the frame to grab a 44-32 lead entering the final quarter.

The Bees misfired on their first three field goal attempts in the fourth as the Jaguars extended their lead to 47-32. Caitlyn Thole finally got the Bees back on the board to end the 10-minute scoreless spell.

SAU clawed back to within seven points at 54-47 on a pair of Abby Wolter free throws with 2:45 left. But GSU did enough down the stretch to close out the win.

The Bees, who led by as many as five points in the first half, did a great job defensively, forcing the Jaguars to shoot just 33 percent from the floor and 2-of-15 from 3-point range. But that wasn't enough to overcome the 16 consecutive misses from the floor that sunk SAU's shooting percentage to 32 percent for the game.

Daughty led St. Ambrose with 20 points and eight rebounds. Wolter finished with 11 points and eight boards.

Brunson and Thole each scored six points, Payton Calouette and Aryelle King finished with three apiece, and Allie Govert netted two.

The road for SAU doesn't get any easier as the Bees face a trip to No. 19 Indiana South Bend Saturday.
