Dominant second quarter gets SAU past Judson

St. Ambrose outscored Judson 22-5 in the second quarter and never looked back in a 65-52 win in Elgin, Ill., Saturday afternoon.

Nursing just a 14-13 lead after one quarter, the Bees took control in the second. SAU shot 9-of-15 from the floor, which included Abby Wolter and Aryelle King each shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from the field, in the frame.

But as good as St. Ambrose was offensively in the second, the team was even better on the defensive end.

Judson (2-19, 2-12 CCAC) missed all 16 of its field goal attempts in the period. The lone Eagle points came from the line, where the team knocked down 5-of-6.

The big quarter pushed the Bees in front 36-18 at the half. The lead ballooned to 20 points when Elly Doe hit a jumper to start the third quarter.

Judson bounced back and got to within nine points at 43-34 in the final two minutes of the third. But Wolter hit a 3-pointer and Caitlyn Thole's steal led to a Kaitlyn Brunson layup to extend the lead to 48-34 entering the fourth.

Payton Calouette hit a free throw to start the final quarter and Kania Starks buried a three to push the lead to 52-34. The margin was at least 12 points the rest of the way.

Judson shot just 30 percent from the floor overall and made just 2-of-13 from beyond the arc.

St. Ambrose (6-13, 6-8 CCAC) was led by King's 15 points. Wolter scored 14 and Brunson added 10.

Calouette scored nine points, Doe and Thole each netted four, and Kashell Daughty, Allie Govert and Starks finished with three points apiece.

SAU will take a two-game winning streak into Wednesday's game at Governors State.
