Bees drop 72-60 decision to Saints

St. Ambrose just couldn't get enough to fall in a 72-60 home loss to Holy Cross Saturday afternoon. The Bees shot less than 36 percent overall from the floor and just 15 percent (2-of-13) from beyond the arc.

Neither team had early success from 3-point range, combining to miss all 11 3-point attempts in the first half. SAU misfired on its first 10 attempts from deep before Abby Wolter hit one midway through the third quarter.

Holy Cross (9-11, 6-6 CCAC) missed its first six 3-point attempts, but the Saints got hot in the third, knocking down four of their final five threes in the period. A 28-point frame helped HC turn what had been a slim 32-28 halftime lead into a 60-43 advantage heading into the fourth.

The third quarter, which saw the Saints shoot 11-of-19 overall, allowed Holy Cross to shoot at a 41-percent clip for the game against a stingy Bee defense.

Along with the poor shooting, St. Ambrose (4-13, 4-8 CCAC) was undone by 24 turnovers, 18 of those coming in the first half.

Wolter led the team with 17 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Kashell Daughty scored 13 and Caitlyn Thole, who battled foul trouble, finished with eight points and seven boards.

Aryelle King came off the bench to contribute seven points and six rebounds. Allie Govert and Kania Starks each scored four points, Kaitlyn Brunson had three, and Elly Doe and Payton Calouette had two points apiece.

SAU will host Calumet Wednesday.
