Big fourth quarter lifts SAU past USF

St. Ambrose outscored St. Francis (Ill.) 23-15 in the fourth quarter to defeat the Saints 69-61 in Joliet, Ill., Saturday afternoon.

With the game tied at 46-46, the Bees started the final frame with a 7-0 run. Payton Calouette and Elly Doe each scored before Caitlyn Thole's three-point play put SAU in front 53-46.

After St. Francis (7-11, 3-7 CCAC) got within 53-50, St. Ambrose pieced together another 7-0 run. Calouette started it with two free throws before Kashell Daughty hit a 3-pointer and Allie Govert scored inside to push the margin into double figures at 60-50.

The lead never dipped below six points from there.

Daughty led SAU with 18 points. She finished 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Thole had 14 points and 16 rebounds. Calouette came off the bench to score 12 points.

It was Daughty and Calouette who sparked a big second quarter. The pair combined for 13 points as the Bees outscored the Saints 18-8 in the period to take a 32-26 halftime lead.

Thole came up big in the fourth, totaling six points and nine rebounds over the final 10 minutes.

St. Ambrose (4-11, 4-6 CCAC) held St. Francis to 35 percent shooting in winning its second straight game.

Abby Wolter and Kaitlyn Brunson each scored seven points in the win. Doe and Govert finished with four points apiece and Kania Starks scored three.

THe Bees return home to host Olivet Nazarene Wednesday.
