Late third-quarter run gets Jaguars past Bees

On a day when both teams struggled from beyond the arc, it was a third-quarter run that proved to be the difference as St. Ambrose fell to Governors State 68-56 at Lee Lohman Arena Saturday afternoon.

Caitlyn Thole's layup had pulled the Bees to within 41-38 midway through the third quarter. But from there, the Jaguars took control. Governors State (12-3, 6-1 CCAC) closed the period on a 14-2 run to grab a 55-40 lead entering the final frame.

SAU went 0-for-6 from the floor and committed nine turnovers over the final six-plus minutes of the third. Two Abby Wolter free throws were the only points the team scored during GSU's game-deciding run.

In the fourth, the Bees got as close as 10 at 60-50 on a Thole layup with 5:07 left and again on a Payton Calouette basket that cut the deficit to 64-54 with 2:55 remaining but could get no closer.

The two teams combined to shoot 1-for-20 from 3-point range, with St. Ambrose (2-9, 2-4 CCAC) finishing 0-for-9 and Governors State making just 1-of-11.

SAU shot better overall from the floor (42.3 percent to 40.6 percent) and outscored GSU 12-11 from the line. But thanks to a 42-33 edge on the boards, the Jaguars were able to attempt 17 more field goals than the Bees (69-52). Governors State grabbed 14 offensive rebounds leading to 11 second-chance points and turned 25 St. Ambrose turnovers into 29 points.

Wolter led the Bees with 14 points and eight rebounds. Kashell Daughty also reached double figures, finishing with 10 points. Thole, Calouette and Kaitlyn Brunson each scored eight. Elly Doe (four points), Allie Govert (two) and Kania Starks (two) also scored in the loss.

Thole grabbed seven rebounds while Daughty pulled down six. Caloutte had three rebounds while Brunson, Elly Holubar and Caroline Cool grabbed two apiece. Brunson handed out a game-best five assists.

SAU will return to action Wednesday with a game at Roosevelt.
